I'm sure it's all of that too. But Mack Brown stated himself what the game did to him and Texas football.

it's true, but don't give NS too much credit, part of the rationale behind his pain was knowing he had their game plan and weaknesses pegged.

Brown said that he changed his offensive philosophy after that game. Tried to be more smash mouth like Alabama. The problem was that they hadn't recruited that way. When it didn't work for a couple of years he panicked and tried to go back but he had been recruiting for smash mouth and he couldn't find the magic again.

Mack had already sold out long before the Bama loss/Greek tragedy. He thought he was going to ride off as a Champion, instead he mistakenly BS'd even himself enough to believe he still had it.

Bama was a late round knockout, Mack's and therefor Texas' issues started the day Brown finally got his NC & the day Black Jesus left for the opportunity to blow a quarter mil a year @ the Cheesecake Factory.

JMO, but I think this is a game Saban changed things some, afterwards.
May be better players, but I think he got away from a prevent offense after this. 2nd half of this game, and the title game with LSU, he certainly showed that offense.

All of this.

Texas' roster was set up for the spread, and for some idiotic reason Brown decided to change his style after losing to Bama by two touchdowns without his starting quarterback.

He felt like he couldn't beat Bama unless he went to smash mouth football, which as we've seen over the last however many years is nearly impossible to beat Bama with. The spread offense is clearly the best option to beat them.

McElroy had cracked ribs and couldn't throw...Bama's game plan got even more conservative b/c of it. Funny how this never gets mentioned. Bama owned the LOS, the issue was never really in doubt and Colts whining about how "he had bama figured out " is just pathetic.

Texas lost control of the massive advantage they had in recruiting when they lost the BCSNCG and struggled to find a quarterback. Their team was driven by great quarterback play.

I remember their classes used to almost be full a year before NSD, and recruits basically begged to commit. Big time recruits, I mean.

Now, in recent years, they've had to compete with Baylor, Texas A&M (who has benefitted from the SEC) TCU, etc. And they've been getting their asses handed to them.

The problem is you cant be smashmouth and recruit mostly from Texas. Most of those kids are soft like Georgia kids with a few tough youngins thrown in. You need kids from Florida, Louisiana, Alabama and a few other places mainly, to play that brand of football; not a bunch of pampered arse track stars.

That narrative has changed, it would seem....

2018-Football/CompositeTeamRankings

...the Longhorns are sitting with the #5 class for 2018 atm. I know it's early, but there is reason to believe that Herman has flipped the narrative in regards to recruiting for Texas.

Saban's got nothin' to do with it - Texas gonna Texas.

They're the biggest head-case program in all of college athletics. For a half a century they've had the biggest budget, best recruiting base, used to go 6-5 and now they go 6-6 or so. Oklahoma comes in a takes their recruits, lesser programs nickel-and-dime their talent base. They get frustrated and take it out on their conference mates - first the SWC and now the Big XII.

Ain't the coaches and it ain't the competition. Fred Akers, David McWilliams (google him), John Mackovich, Mack Brown, Charlie Strong - didn't matter. Switzer, Slocum, Saban; all coaches at programs that Texas should have better resources against but made UT their whipping boy at some point. Mack was a stud for getting the drunken prom queen up on the podium one more time.

But nobody broke Texas but Texas. Long time ago, too.

... all that and before V. Young (2005) their last title was in 1970.

Haven't had but one chance to win another one since 2005 and they lost that one.

I think Colt took himself out to keep from really getting hurt and falling in the draft.

I remember him going to the sideline and no one even looking at his injury. He didn't rub his arm or shake it or try to loosen it up. Just got up and went to the sideline and talked to his dad for awhile about what he stood to gain or lose by going back out there. Millions of dollars vs a championship trophy. I don't blame him one bit though.

Funny he was 100% at his pro day a few weeks later.

Colt hasn't done much in the NFL.

During his 7 yrs he's played in 35 games with 26 TD's, 23 INT's and 159.6 passing yds per game.

Was the 85th pick in the draft.
