Steal home on intentional walk?

Bama just walked out hottest hitter while we had a guy on 3rd (game tied 1-1, 1 out, bottom 8th, rubber game of the weekend).

Seems like this would be your best chance to steal home. Left handed pitcher (back toward runner), right handed batter (ball thrown to first base side), and slow delivery.

If you had a guy with the right wheels, would you consider sending him?

No there is only one out. Good fly ball or squeeze bunt is better chance of working

Have you ever pitched before? You do know pitcher can still see the runner on 3rd right? I mean, it has worked before, but it's not like because it's a lefty it gives you more time to go.

Actually, no I haven't, but I do expect that a guy facing the other direction inherently sees less than the guy facing the runner.

Wasn't trying to say it was the right thing to go. It was an honest question of people who know more about the game than I do.

Why start out with such an a-hole question?

Folks here are insecure; it makes them feel better about themselves to make crappy comments to/about others.

No. It was a stupid fricking insinuation that because his back is to the runner that he is facing away, not able to see the runner, and wouldn't be able to hold him as well as if he was a right handed pitcher.

And to OP, you better get thicker skin if you're gonna post much here. I didn't even call you an idiot in my reply.

Thanks for the follow up reply. Cleared it up completely for me.

Just as I first thought, you are indeed an a-hole.

It actually does make a difference that it's a left handed pitcher, but not because his back is turned. As soon as the runner leaves the pitcher will be alerted by teammates. It would have to be timed perfectly but the fact the throw will be going away from the plate and the runner makes it possible to pull off. With a right handed pitcher the throw will come towards the runner and make it that much more difficult

Hey, look! Someone new wants to be Alpha A-hole on this thread.

I don't watch that much baseball, and I asked a question of those who do.

At least the LSU guy has an impressive pedigree to back up the baseball discussion. You need to just go back to being that state where all other states feel better by comparison in almost any metric.

And moving to Houston does not improve your standing. All you do is reinforce the stereotype for the natives.

Not the same... This is stealing home on a lazy throw from the catcher back to the pitcher...

Not what OP was describing in his fantasy mind...

You only steal home on someone doing a full wind up and not an abbreviated or fast one. I wouldn't think he would need to do that while pitching out.

Correct. And certainly not with one out.

Just about the only person I would ever send home in the modern era is Ricky Henderson

Not actually it isn't. People steal home more often than most would imagine. It might happen a few times a year at best but it happens. Hell it just happened the other day in the MLB. So yes it is a legit question to ask how effective it would be during a intentional walk by a lefty.

Also if the pitcher is doing the full wind up, then it makes it even easier (not that it is easy to begin with) and the right handed batter helps as well.

I think it could work in the right circumstances, like have a fast runner on 3rd, maybe do it with a relief pitcher who may be even more surprised by a steal than a starter.

It is another reason why you always get the biggest led that you possible can, so you always have that option to go if the opportunity presents itself. You see the lefty taking his sweet time during the pitch out, and maybe your coach sends you.

I know about stealing home, as I successfully did it in a high school game.

It would seem that a LH/RH hitter would play more into it than a LH/RH pitcher....LH batter the pitch is right of the plate toward the runner. RH batter the pitch is left of the plate away from the runner, not to mention the catcher's view down the 3rd base line could be semi-obstructed by the batter. Seems easier to pull off with a RH batter to me.
