GoGamecocks: Steve Spurrier says Gamecocks are not pursuing Notre Dame transfer QB, Myrtle Beach native Everett Golson. Story: LINK

Steve Spurrier confirmed Wednesday what seemed to have become clear earlier this week.

“We are not pursuing (Everett Golson),” Spurrier told The State on Wednesday morning. “We are not really in that.”

Golson announced last week that he was transferring from Notre Dame to play his final year at another school. The Myrtle Beach native led the Irish to the national title game in 2012 and threw for nearly 6,000 yards in two seasons. Last season, he battled to keep his starting job while committing 22 turnovers.

Golson has visited with Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher and reportedly made a trip to Florida.

The Gamecocks are looking to replace Dylan Thompson at quarterback. Redshirt sophomore Connor Mitch emerged from spring practice as the frontrunner for the job.

People treat this guy like he's Cam fricking Newton. He's not even Braxton Miller for frick's sake. Average at best.

Now the SEC will allow schools to accept grad student transfers without a waiver if the transfers meet certain standards. Among the criteria for the transfer: always stayed eligible as an undergrad; no significant disciplinary issues at the old school; and earned all possible APR points. If a player doesn't meet those standards, a school can still go through the current process of seeking a waiver from the SEC office.

Are guys that are transferring after Graduation treated differently than other recruits? I thought a coach was not allowed to address recruiting players by name until they've signed with the program. No biggie, just wondering if there is a difference.

Yeah, once they've graduated and are shopping schools to transfer, they are basically free agents. It's pick and choose for both program and player.

We went through this with Russell Wilson ... the coaches liked him although they had beaten him twice at NC State, but not enough to bring him on for a year to replace Garcia and/or Shaw.

Once the reports start, especially when it was Golson telling everyone he was going home to SC a couple of weeks ago - then the coaches have the right to put the rumors to rest.

Golson screwed himself with Spurrier during the recruiting process out of HS. I thought Spurrier took it light on him in the official release. He could have said something much more Spurrierish.

Well Spurrier does have a good reputation with QBs so I would trust his decision on this.
