A friend and me are having a discussion about sports analyst and commentators. Does anyone know of some that do not have any experience in actually playing sports? I know there has to be some writers or such that haven't played NFL or college. TIA

Play by Play guys normally aren't former pro athletes.

Writers normally aren't either.

Does Erin Andrews count as an analyst?

play by play = broadcaster by trade

color man = former coach or player that gives the telecast an "insider"

Not always.

One of the best, Pat Summerall is a former player.

Not sure if he is a former player, but he is the universally recognized "Worldwide voice" of figure skating.

I've always thought he was an odd choice for the SEC.

Verne was the sports guy on channel 8 in Dallas and was the Cowboy radio play-by-play guy in the 70's.

May have played high school ball but I don't think he played college ball.

Depends on how far back you want to go, what region and what sports they announce. I don't believe Howard Cosell played any sports on the high school level, and surely not all the Alberts did; would also wonder about the Carays--Harry, Skip and (ugh!) Chip, just to cite a few.
