John Avery- Ole Miss
Robert Edwards- Georgia
JJ Johnson- Miss State
Jamal Lewis- Tennessee
Travis Henry- Tennessee
Fred Taylor- Florida
Kevin Faulk- LSU
Fred Talley- Arkansas

Reminiscing on some of these names makes me remember that this used to be a tailback driven league (as was the NFL) John Avery's little arse was picked in the first round. These names are off the top of my head, so don't be mad if your guy wasn't included, just just means he wasn't special enough for me to remember. Mcallister and Alexander are excluded because they have their own thread

Edwards was a freak with bad Injury luck.

Yes, he was a stallion.

No one terrified a young Riseupfromtherubble like Jamal Lewis though. (We later found out I was a great judge of character)

Well when Kevin Faulk left LSU he was the #2 leading rusher in SEC history and (IIRC) #1 all time in total yards, so I'm going to go with him as the best of this bunch.

Anybody remember Deuce Staley from SC? He was pretty good. JUCO transfer, so he didn't play a full career here. Had a great NFL Career with the Eagles and Steelers.

He was a great back...but stats don't always tell the whole story. You and I both know we can't use that as justification for saying A is better than B or else you're essentially saying Timmy Chang is tGoat quarterback. I'd probably place Faulk at 3 or 4 behind Lewis, Taylor, and possibly Henry as guys that put the fear in me as a bama fan. We struggled tackling big backs in that age though.

Jamal Lewis maybe, but I don't see how Fred Taylor is in the same class as Kevin Faulk at all.

Maybe it was his reflective visor and bandana

that plus just a general fear of 90's Florida vs 90's LSU.

He wasn't the center of florida's offense like Faulk was...but Taylor did average more ypc and had more receiving yards in college than Faulk did. He was scary when he got the football, he just wasn't the only weapon in the offense

He was a good back, but he benefited from being kind of an afterthought.

Fred taylor was a beast. No doubt.

But he did benefit from the offense being so wide open. A screen pass would go 40 yards because the safties were running with their around like chickens with their heads cut off

Talley wasn't a 90's back

That would have been Madre Hill and Chris Chukwuma for Arkansas

And his offspring is Kelvin Taylor who is on UFs roster and hopefully ready to bust loose as a junior this year. He had to share carries with Matt Jones...so he should get plenty of chances.

His dad and him both started slow at UF for some reason and I think Kelvin will finally reach potential this year. His dad did have some knee problems early on at UF which slowed him. Fred benefitted from having a pass offense which allowed him to run sprint draws a lot and catch defenses napping.

jeez louise, Kev is still criminally underrated. I know stats aren't everything but goodness gracious when he left LSU he was #2 rushing all time in SEC history, #2 in touchdowns all time in SEC history and #1 in total yards all time in SEC history and the guy can't even crack the top 3 of some people's list of best backs of the mid-90's?

I agree with this. God how I miss guys like Jamal, Travis Henry + Travis Stevens, Little Man Stewart, Cobb and Webb and on and on. And how happy I am that we're finally starting to see a few of those backs at UT again. We were so fricking spoiled.

Cedric Cobbs and Madre Hill were better than Fred Talley for Arkansas.
