2017-18 Preseason SEC Power Rankings

quote:

I almost skipped my SEC basketball preseason power rankings this year.

And it had nothing to do with laziness or being uneducated on all 14 teams. I’ve spent many months now dissecting the players and teams, so I feel confident in my knowledge of the league.

But here’s what I’m not confident about:

Where these 14 teams will actually finish.

Yes, all 14. I am not 100 percent certain on where anyone will finish due to the depth of talent in the conference.

Most years, it’s been easy to pinpoint the league’s top five and bottom four teams. The middle is usually difficult to predict, but we’ve at least felt pretty good about the top tier and bottom tier.

Enter the 2017-18 season, where that predictability is no longer present. Instead, we’re left with a conference where nearly every team expects to be in the NCAA Tournament conversation come March.

Being ranked seventh in recent years meant you were average. Being ranked seventh this year means you are just outside the Top 25. And because of how little difference there is between most of the teams ranked in the bottom half, it’s impossible to know how the standings will shake out.

That reality almost caused the obliteration of my preseason power rankings.

However, I decided to push on and do my best at figuring out an order for all these teams. I’ve changed this order about 837 times since I began the process a few months ago, so that should tell you all you need to know about my confidence level.

Never before has there been a year where I lack confidence in every single spot. That is, until now.

And as always, preseason power rankings mean nothing. They are fun to do, but nothing more than an educated guess on what could happen.

He has some nice write ups on each team in there too. If you like SEC basketball you should check out the site. Lovell does a good job and puts up a lot of content.

National Ranking in parentheses

I gotta disagree. There's no way they'll be at the bottom end (maybe LSU since their all star left). Also got a problem with him putting us at 7. Nationally. AP will have us higher than that, so that we can fall farther when the freshmen frick up

They had a good recruiting class. It's the same reason UK is number 1 year after year

I feel like the Ags could be sneaky good and win another SEC title if things fall just right. Our OOC schedule is pretty damn rough(for us) and we're missing our best guard early on. We might not have the best record going into SEC play, but we'll rack up some wins.

Moses Kingsley and Dusty Hannahs were not role players – they were major pieces of the puzzle for several seasons. Yet, it feels like their departures are being pushed aside as though they played 10 minutes per game. Both added a different dynamic to the overall success of the program, and replacing Kingsley’s production inside could prove especially difficult.

Totally agree that both players were great for us but I think they are overestimated the loss of Hannahs a little bit. He was great last season but Macon could have easily taken more minutes from him. The Kingsley loss could be huge if Gafford isn't able to step up.

Well, no place to go but up. I have a feeling we won't be last in the SEC.

I just think, like the author said in the prelude, that somebody like LSU could finish 14th in the league and still be a solid basketball team, as crazy as that sounds. Let's put it this way, I don't think the 5th best team in the league losing on the road at the 14th best team is going to be a gigantic shock or upset this year.

If this was 2011 I'd pick this LSU team 5th or so in the league. The league is just so much better than it was then. Not one single team in 2017 do you look at and go "bad coach, bad talent, terrible team". Not one. Nobody is even really close.

Not sure if you have amnesia, but we hired a damn good coach and he’s been killing it on the recruiting trail as well. If we finish last, it would be a massive disappointment.

The entire league has damn good coaches and all of those recruits are still in high school.

Wade is good and will be good, but he's 2-3 years behind other really good coaches and all of their really good recruits that are already on teams for this coming season.

My question for Arkansas is that when the tempo slows down, how many reliable guys do they have to score? The backcourt is fantastic, but guard play across the league has improved enough that it'll be harder to turn teams over as much as Arkansas likes to. Kingsley in the post and Hannahs from 3 were reliable when a bucket was needed in the halfcourt.
