They have top tier agricultural, forestry, engineering and architecture programs. South Carolina has a world class international business program and generally more students major in social sciences and the liberal arts.
She called them hillbillies because Clemson is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and a large percentage of their fans are located in the South Carolina upstate.

If you go to school in Clemson, there aren't other fans there. You spend 4 years with no dissenting opinions. Gamecock fans are much more self deprecating and humorous than Clemson folks.
