South Carolina hoops 1996-98...what happened?

I was a tad younger then, so I don't know any of the back story or if there were internal issues. But...how do you have two solid years, 96-97 especially, only to bomb in the tourney twice, against a 15 and 14 seed respectfully?
Fogler was a good coach, yeah? 15-1 in SEC play with two wins over a Kentucky team that ended up as National Runner-up isn't anything to overlook. There had to be some other reason Coppin State dominated that game.

Fogler was a lazy recruiter. We were guard heavy. Coppin St played a mean 2-3 zone similar too our current defense.

BJ McKie was one of the best players in SEC history. He could take over a game.
The Coppin State game to me is the biggest upset in NCAA Tournament history. a 15-2 that could have been a 16-1.
Coppin State didn't even have a band. They borrowed one from one of their rival schools.

Definitely one of the biggest upsets, and nobody mentions it much when compared to the other 15-2 matchups. I know FGCU is big because they went to the Sweet 16, and Lehigh over Duke...well, because Duke.
But there is more parity now in the one and done era. In the 90's you had more upperclassmen. Wasn't that Coppin State team one more bucket away from beating Texas in the round of 32?

It was a major upset. We were picked by many to get to the Final four

Fang Mitchell was their coach. And they didn't just win, they beat us pretty badly.

Our best shooting guard didn't score a point. Larry Davis

McKie, Watson, Davis, Stack, Gallman and Herbert Lee. Man those were some fun times save our tournament collapses.
