If the Dores can pick up one more win, they will probably go to a bowl game at 5-7.

There are 80 spots for bowl games and there will not be 80 teams with six wins. NCAA rules state that bowl slots are filled by 5-7 teams based on Academic Progress Rate. Vanderbilt's is among the highest in the nation at 987.

Agreed

There is no way Auburn deserves a bowl game this year...

I would love for Bowls to take a step up in quality and only take teams with winning records.

They've certainly been better this season.

They still are pretty terrible and would probably get shutout by a semi-decent 6-6 or 7-5 opponent in a bowl game.

They should have a bowl game for every team. Doesn't really matter. It is something to watch on TV.

We'd obviously prefer to win out and go 6-6, but given where this team was at the beginning of the season, if we win 2 out of our last 3 SEC games to finish 5-7, most of us will be happy.

The possibility of bowling at 5-7 is real, but we aren't first in the APR pecking order. That would be Nebraska, which is 5-6 with a game vs. Iowa remaining. Next is 5-5 Utah State, which has Nevada and BYU remaining. We're third.

Jerry Palm's latest projections have 79 teams reaching 6 wins, leaving Nebraska as the sole 5-7 team in a bowl.

Time for some changes then. I don't like to turn away college football games, but the bowls are supposed to be a reward. For a good season. If we want to reward academic achievement, that's fine. Have a dedicated bowl system for the nerds.

No team below 0.500 should be going to a regular bowl game.

Vandy in a bowl game is nonsense.

Vandy would actually be second in the 5-7 APR pecking order behind Nebraska. What sucks the most though is that if 2 special teams plays go differently (make one of the missed FGs vs WKU and kick a even a 25 yard punt instead of a 12 yard punt vs UF the team would already be bowl eligible).

I'm not high on 5-7 teams making bowls but if the NCAA is going to allow the unbelievably ridiculous number of bowl games they approve someone has to play in them. With such a young football team and QB I would not mind getting in the extra practice (only 6 seniors in 2 deep on both sides of the ball combined).

***Knew Nebraska was ahead, didn't realize Utah St was as well***

How the hell is Nebraska higher in APR than Vanderbilt?

There appears to be two trains of thought: "More football is better than less football" and "more quality football between good teams is better". If the standard for a Bowl game was 8–4 or 9–3, every Bowl would probably be highly watched, and going to a Bowl would actually mean that your team was legit and hard to beat.

It doesn't necessarily bother me that 6–6 G5 teams are playing in Bowls. I love filling out the Bowl picks and I don't have to watch it if I don't want to. But I've always been minded that quality should be chosen over quantity, no matter the context.

I'm going to be honest. If we were a Big 6 program, sure, I'd find going to a bowl at 5-7 to be undignified. But we're not and, frankly, I'd be happy if we went to one. Yes, a bowl bid in those circumstances is basically a Participation Trophy, but some of us are realistic about the fact that we are not, in fact, national title contenders.

I think it's because the P stands for "Progress" and that is part of the formula. I don't recollect exactly how it shakes out, but top-tier academic programs have less room to progress.
