kids get full ride and most now get additional money for cost of attendance and some even qualify for pell grants. So it is beyond why kids cant make it. If they cant afford Rent and utilities etc, they should stay in the damn dorm.

It is tough for some kids though.

One of my old students went to Alabama. Mark Ingram had to fly back to Michigan and to save money flew out of Birmingham. He had to spend the night on the couch of my student because he did not have any money to spare.

I think about cases where a kid like that might have needed to go home immediately because of a family emergency. If the fund were used that way, I would have no problem with it.

Also, OT, but are things like glasses for athletes covered by the university?
