This thread is very promising
I've never heard of an Opportunity Fund until I read where some OM posters mentioned it.

t's suppose to be there for emergency costs that aren't covered by scholarship money. Our RT used it over the summer for transportation to a funeral. It would be extremely easy to trace. I have a hard time believing that a water bill fits into this because scholarship money covers cost of living. Maybe it would work if it were a family members cost of living but either way, if it was used, the paper trail is there.

There have been universities even buy cars for athletes with the cooperation of the NCAA, because they were able to prove that the kid did not own a car and the family did not have the money to provide a car for the kid.
i don't understand how a college student on campus necessarily needs a car. sure, they'd want one, but in truth, it's not a necessity. i'm just curious the justification the college and ncaa has for that.

Bjork, nor Freeze, no Tunsil's lawyer have mentioned the opportunity fund. I've said this before and I'll say it again: just because it exists doesn't mean it was used for Tunsil. It involves an application, receipts, and approval. It isn't a "here's 500 bucks, we'll do the ppw later system." Additionally, it is need based and emergency based, not want based and continually paying regular expenses based. Why Ole Miss fans keep bringing this up, I do not understand.

The opportunity fund, yes. No one on this website used this excuse until Ole Miss fans. Why? Because fans will try to justify any wrong doing by their program, regardless of how unlikely and ridiculous it may sound

Yeah asking what it was because ole miss fans continually have been using it as justification for Tunsil getting paid by coaches

Half the threads on the front page are OM related, it's the offseason, and Tunsil getting money is the biggest story in the conference right now. DWI

Well, you for one.. You made a thread about it.
I wasn't aware that a fund existed at all. And I wasn't aware that it could be used to provide aid to a student-athletes parent to pay rent/utilities.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with that.
I get that it could be a slippery slope, but examples like the one you cited show how it could be very useful.

If Ole Miss has an opportunity to pull a blue-chip prospect, they got the funds to make it a reality.
"Opportunity Funds".....

I guess Bo Davis should have done his research.

Ignore some of the bitter Ole Miss posters.
It was a good question.
I was wondering the same thing. I actually think it is a good idea for kids without means who may be pretty far from home and need to get back for some type of family emergency.
As long as receipts are maintained and transparent, I see nothing wrong with it. It is not like it is a monthly stipend.
