So Saban is rightfully a deity on this board- but recruiting wise I had to laugh

I was trying to see what rational thought there was to us actually flipping the Tua kid or if we are in the full blown mist of a clown show for maybe losing Brennan (big brennan fan). Through the articles something made me laugh. Tua has facetime weekly with Saban.

At first glance well yeah that is why he is the best that is why he gets the big bucks and probably deserves more, but the more I thought about the more awkward it was. Saban makes millions and is the most powerful man in football. He is the face of our 6 in a row losses. Just a real antichrist in this world where LSU football takes on too much meaning. A man to be feared and/or respected! A measure of excellence to aspire to.

If you pull back the curtain though you have this guy talk sweet nothings to a 16-18 year olds weekly and trying to get them on board. That sounds like an absolutely horrible job, and honestly something I don't respect. I mean yeah he wins football games and I want that, but honestly I think we have put entirely too much value on Carlos Weiner types.

Yeah Saban is probably the only coach to FaceTime a recruit.

I don't really understand what you're trying to say. Do you not think that every coach makes contact with their prized recruits on a very regular basis?

Hell, Harbaugh has cuddle parties with them.

What in the hell do you think a LSU head coach would have to do to be successful? Just hope the prospects just show up?

What would really be the difference in him making a phone call?

no he needs to face time and visit

and to be honest try to figure out what Saban does and do it. Not just recruiting but all aspects.

I was just discussing with a friend that in about two years, Harbaugh is going to get sick of losing to Meyer and kissing arse of 18 yr olds and go back to the pros. I kind of agree with OP. These guys must think to themselves some days, "what the frick am I doing here?"

It is a bit ridiculous that they've got to do it, but right now that's simply a requirement of the job.

Unless you get rid of NSD and let the kids make binding commitments whenever they get ready (which would bring an entirely new set of problems), it will never change.

yep and we worship or hate them in part to how good their game is with 17y old boys.

I mean that is a huge part of it. Honestly it is the worst part of college football.

I have to agree with this post.

The pressure of big time college football has contorted a lot of things. The oddity of the courting system for recruits is just hard to fathom, especially when you actually try to picture a man as intense as Nick Saban having weekly FaceTime chats with high school boys.

The same goes for Orgeron, and all the other coaches.

Can you imagine Bear Bryant having weekly FaceTime chats with recruits?

That's one way to look at it. Another way is to say, "if you pull back the curtain you has this guy who is developing a relationship with someone who will be on his team for 4 years. He's showing the player and the family that he cares about them and that he makes them a priority in his schedule"

I wonder how different your tune would be if you heard Ed O was doing something similar with Dylan Moses the past few weeks.

To be fair, same shite happens in the NBA during free agency. Hell remember the Clippers locking out Marc Cuban on DeAndre Jordan? They twitted out picks of the sleepover.

That's not a good analogy. I can't imagine Bear Bryant doing anything in this day and age because he was from a different time. Couldn't imagine him using a smartphone, wearing headphones, etc. But I can guarantee you, that he would have used whatever resources that were at his disposal if it meant making Alabama the best.
