Serious question regarding the next Auburn OC

I read somewhere that Malzhan had something along the lines of "the position is wide open", implying that the new OC would be 100% in control of the offensive scheme and play calling. If that is true, wouldn't the new OC clean house and get his guys or is Malzhan gonna keep the existing staff like Hand or Burns, for example.

wide open sounds like, there are no leaders at the moment for the position FWIW.

unless there is another context to the quote

Don't know for sure, but I'm pretty certain those guys will remain. I mean, it worked for Tuberville!

He left out the second half of the sentence which literally said "The job is wide open & the new OC will run the offense."

I believe it's true as I think Gus learned his lesson about trying to be both HC and OC at this level. He wants to step back now and be a CEO type and run the program as a whole instead of just the offense.

And to answer the OP I think it really depends on who we hire. Hand is a solid OL coach so I think there's a good chance he is retained. If we hire Chip Lindsey, which seems likely, I can see him retaining Burns because he has already hired him once as RB coach at ASU.

If Gus is sincere about letting the new OC run the show, then he'll let the new guy bring in who he wants. Guess we'll find out sooner than later how serious Gus is about this.

There was more to the quote along the lines of play calling but I was unsure and cannot find where I saw it.

What I was getting at is, we all know Gus tends to meddle, which is probably while Briles wouldn't work. It just seems odd to be willing to give someone all the weight and responsibility but they have to do it handicapped.

That's a logical leap you take at your own risk

No chance Hand gets promoted to OC? Didn't he and Malzahn have a pretty good offense in Tulsa when they were CO-OC?

I don't think so. Unless he could hire one hell of a QB coach. Hand was also the run-game coordinator and that's not where we need help.

Heard the decision was already made. A true legend coming to run the Auburn Family's spread I-formation attack. It was a tough negotiation, what with his stellar Quarterly Sales numbers at his Hoover Vacuum job, but Gus gets what Gus wants.

UPDATE : Dave Rader is actually a State Senator in Oklahoma now, so Gus basically spat upon democracy with this hire. A true lowpoint in Auburn history.

That's what I was thinking. Go out and find a qb guru. Hand can still coach oline. I don't think Malzahn can afford to completely change his offense this year. Run something similar to what you have recruited for. Malzahn will be on the hot seat next year.
