Vols in the 3rd period and in a fight with Flyers

39 Tennessee
37 Dayton

I expected this to be close and a possible upset

But any coach is going to be compared to her and not be able to meet expectations because of it.

Kinda. I don't think anyone expects Holly or any other coach to be Pat. What and who she was to us was wayyy bigger than basketball and I don't expect to see anyone like her again in my lifetime. A lot of folks outside of Tennessee don't quite understand what she was to our entire state -- coach was such a small part of it.

And I don't think anyone expects someone to be able to replicate that. I mean damn she was just an incredible human being that continuously amazed us all with her wit and strength. I'd have loved to have seen her as Governor.

That said, we do expect more from our program. I'd say only UCONN has the fan expectations we do and both programs should be making the final four at the same pace Summitt was making them. The talent on the LV team right now is ridiculous as is the class coming in. If Holly would stop being an assistant coach and start being a head coach we'd be where we should be but she's still too soft on players and although I've seen her flash potential I'm starting to think she's never going to grow outside of her old role.

What I'm getting at is a good HC would be taking the LVs farther than Holly has thus far. Summitt's shadow will always be at UT. She was too important for that to fade but the talent, the program, the brand -- everything you need is there for a good coach to come in and win.

UK didn't fade away and die when they changed coaches. They went out and got another great coach who could take advantage of their blueblood status. That's what should be happening here. And hell even if we only went with Summitt's coaching tree there's no shortage of options but the LVs are big enough to where no one should be off the table.

UK goes in cycles in a very Hindu way

Baron = Brahma / creator - coached 41 years
Joe B = Vishnu / preserver - coached 13 years
Eddie = Shiva / destroyer - coached 4 years
Little Ricky = Brahma / creator - coached 8 years
Tubby = Vishnu / preserver - coached 10 years
Billy Clyde = Shiva / destroyer - coached 2 years
Cal = Brahma / creator - coached 8 years
?? = Vishnu / preserver
?? = Shiva / destroyer

What Kentucky has done well is limit the "Shivas" while maxing the "Brahmas"
66.3% / 57 years for creator coaches
26.7% / 23 years for preserver coaches
7.00% / 6 years for destroyer coaches

Bama wandered the desert between Bear and Nick so so Holly will do her time, then the person who follows will wreck it, and then the fans will have adjusted for their next big coach. It is almost impossible to follow a legend with a legend because the expectations are so high.

Do you think the coach following K at Duke will succeed?
Do you think the coach following Nick will succeed?
It is just the natural cycle for sports programs at the highest level.

The upside if the Vols can match UK is that both "preserver" coaches at UK at least hung a banner!

Nothing like a thread for second place ONLY if you're not in the same bracket as UConn.

Wooden had Sam Gilbert for their run
Geno has ESPN on his run

Until this changes it will hurt the sport

Actually, I was making fun of part of your thread title: ONLY Auburn and LSU fail to advance

Edited to add: If ANYONE ever sees me posting smack over any women's sport (and I LOVE softball), please just give me a perma-ban.

All those Ivy League teams play like that. They are fundamentally sound and take up the entire shot clock. A&M fell into their trap for three quarters then decided to punch them in the mouth. Good win against a tricky team.

ESPN showing highlights of UConn's title win last year and analyzing It like its a current game. ESPN's push of UConn women's basketball is one of the biggest travesties in sports.

Bump bc Cheese needs to update this shite.

And bc Carolina is currently beating the ever loving holy shite outta Quinnipiac in the sweet 16. 87-46 half way thru the 4th. Might as well say the Lady Gs are Elite Eight bound right along with our men.

ETA: Gamecocks advance to the Elite Eight after beating Quinnipiac 100-58.

To be honest, Quinnipiac was way outside of their weight class in that game. USC did what a high powered team facing a gutsy but incredibly outclassed squad should do... they put the hammer down and blew them out early.

A tremendous NCAAT run for the Lady Bobcats though as they knocked off some quality teams before running into a USC squad that did exactly what you have to do with a 12 seed playing out of their mind.

It might sound like I am damning USC with faint praise here but shutting the door hard on a tough Cinderella like Quinnipiac that had already knocked off some big names is vital in the NCAAT.
