Yes football will always be king to 97% of us on this board, but the SEC is terribly putrid at basketball right now. We kick arse at the other two big sports(baseball and football) but we are a national shame as a whole in basketball right now. Besides UF and UK we have nothing. What schools do you think have the potential to be a perennial NCAA sweet 16 program or better?

I think LSU, Vandy, UGA, Alabama and Tennessee have the assets and capability to have badass basketball.

Vandy could be a poor mans Duke with their school prestige, home court advantage, and the SEC label.

LSU has a history of success but can't ever seem to sustain it. I know Tiger fans love football and baseball but they would go nuts with a winner in basketball as well. Plus LSU has NOLA and Houston it could cherry pick from with the right guy.

Alabama has a decent basketball history compared with the SEC. With the resources and backing that athletic department has, I could see them escalating with the right guy.

UGA has been to a final four and sits on top of a gold mine for basketball recruiting

Tennessee also has the infrastructure to be a force in basketball. TBA holds 21k and easily fills up when we are winning, plus TBA was just redone and looks like an NBA arena. Bruce Pearl brought us within one free throw from the final four and the program was nationally respected in the 1970s under Ray Mears.

Your thoughts? I will say the SEC desperately needs someone to hire Bruce Pearl. All that guy does is win and recruit top 20 rosters.

Certainly a valid concern, but I think Bruce will be just fine as long as he doesn't tell little fibs to the NCAA about minuscule violations. He is still a terrific personality and could come back with a hotter fire under his arse.

Johnny Jones just needs a solid assistant to help him with defense. He's got the recruiting down pat. We havent recruited as well as we have recently in a very long time, especially considering it's not just us locking up LA kids like Brady did (with Butch Pierre's assistance really). I mean holy shite at us landing a Top 5 class. Then next year have a top center coming in, a great transfer and arguably the top JUCO player coming in. Then the year after that have a top player already committed in Simmons.

We just need to put this all together coaching wise.

FIFY

1. UK - do I have to list the reasons?
2. UF - see #1
3. LSU- has the tradition, only program in its state, facilites, I have been in the PMAC when it was crunk so I know the potential for atmosphere is there. I think CJJ gets us there next year though.
4. shite all the sec programs could field competitive teams.

I think the coaching position is incredibly crucial compared to other sports. Got to have the right fit on the bench.

Calipari and Billy D said we have a great coach in Barbee.

No offense but I feel like Auburn gives the least amount of shits about basketball than any other SEC school. Kind of like Tennessee with baseball. You guys did have Charles Barkley though.

The only SEC schools that could are UK, Arkansas, Florida, Mizzou and Tennessee.

Basketball is the third most popular sport behind an irrelevant sport like college baseball at LSU.

The rest have either horrible facilities or no fan support.

Uhhh, you might want to follow your own program a little better. You hired one of the best coaches in college baseball in Dave Serrano. You're also 5-0 to start this season.

Sport hierarchy has nothing to do with a sport being able to be good or not.

Florida is good at all 3 sports fairly consistently.

Oh I do. I lived in a fraternity house right by the stadium last year and one of my best friends I played with in HS played left field for UT my freshman year before he had to transfer to Coastal Carolina due to grades. I know quite a few of the current players. Dave Serrano is top notch and should get us turned around pretty soon.

I'm just speaking for our fan base as a whole. A handful of SEC schools routinely get 10k for a game and UT is lucky to get 2500. My buddy who played for UT said Tennessee has the worst following for baseball compared to the other SEC schools he played against. Also claimed that MSU had the meanest hecklers but he never got a chance to play at LSU who is notorious for hecklers.

I'm going to try and be as unbiased as I can, and say that LSU doesn't do this to the extent some other schools do.

Because usually, we don't need to.

Haha fair enough. For whatever reason all the baseball players at UT seem to think you guys are the worst. TIFWIW I've only been to UT and Vanderbilt for baseball games.
