DESTIN, Fla. — The SEC and its football coaches discussed the possibility on Tuesday of going to a 14-week season every year, with an eye on giving teams two bye weeks per season.
Some years there are two bye weeks anyway, based on the calendar, but most of the time every team only gets one bye week. The current discussion revolves around making it more permanent.
It would involve moving up the season, as the SEC championship and National Football Playoff selection appears locked into the first weekend in December.
The potential new calendar discussed with coaches and athletics directors, according to commissioner Greg Sankey.
“We’ll see where that lands,” Sankey said.
The meetings last unitl Friday, when the presidents meet and vote.

Things like this that are directly tied to players rest, timing and things I almost always want to hear what the coaches all say. They are the ones who truly know whether this is needed or not.
To my totally untrained brain it seems like a pretty decent idea. Basically adding another bye week. Possibly get rid of the SEC/SoCon challenge the week before rivalry week (the defacto 2nd bye).

It's a great idea on paper, but it never quite works out that way in real life. Some team will have to play 7 games before getting a bye week, then get 2 within 5 weeks or a team will have 6 of 8 opponents get a bye week before facing them. Stuff like that which is hard to avoid. Unless the SEC says "we ain't playing football on the 5th and 9th Saturdays of the season, we're just shutting it down." Otherwise, someone gets the shaft every time.

I'm all for another week of CFB

Would make it easier to reschedule a game when gaytors claim a rainout when they are afraid to play a game...

The only downside would be playing a week earlier in the hottest part of the year. We need night games only for everything in Aug.

NCAA determines the length of the season(s). They already have a 14 week season. Every year. It is the on again, off again 15 week season that needs to be made permanent.
Twelve games, one bye, CG week = 14 week season. Twelve games, two byes, CG week = 15 week season.

Agree. You can't play those games before 6 PM if you are going to play the week before Labor Day.

Play neutral site games in domes like the ones in Atlanta and Dallas.

If I'm reading that correctly this would just be moving the season up a week to compensate for two byes and not actually adding another game.
I dislike bye weeks as a fan as it is, frick adding another one. This is basically moving a game from October to August and then taking that week off in October in addition to your normal bye. That makes no sense to me
Adding another game to the schedule and starting the season sooner I'm on board with. Just make the extra a 9th conference game

We will, and maybe 1 or 2 other teams, but all 14 teams can't do that.

Houston, Dallas, New Orleans, Atlanta, and we're out of domed stadiums. 4 teams can. Maybe Az, but who wants to travel that far.

Maybe there could be advantages to shutting it down for two dates?
Not trolling ......but it would help teams in the conference that aren't as deep in talent as others.
You could focus on other conference games for two weekends (not necessarily a plus!)
But it definitely should be considered...

Sure beats having the only bye in week 3 like Arkansas does.

Not at all....some things in life you just can't take back or change.
Gaytors pussying out of a "permanent" SEC rival game is something you can't take back.
Ever!

Really, life goes on, you lost 16-10 time to move on.
