Kentucky Radio

Kentucky Sports Radio recently researched the buyout number in every SEC coach’s contract from most substantial to economical:

SEC head coach buyouts (if fired after 2016 season)
Nick Saban, Alabama: $23.3 million
Bret Bielema, Arkansas: $15.4 million
Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M: $15 million
Hugh Freeze, Ole Miss: Not disclosed, but previous contract was $15 million
Kirby Smart, Georgia: $13.5 million
Mark Stoops, Kentucky: $12 million ($18 million if all assistants fired, too)
Jim McElwain, Florida: $11.25 million
Butch Jones, Tennessee: $10 million
Will Muschamp, South Carolina: $9.1 million
Gus Malzahn, Auburn: $8.9 million
Dan Mullen, Miss. St: $8.5 million (remainder of unpaid salary)
Les Miles, LSU: $6.4 million
Barry Odom, Mizzou: Aggregated amount of unpaid salary, benefits, incentives
Derek Mason, Vanderbilt: Not disclosed (private)

if fired after 2016 season

This is without cause. I'm pretty sure if Ole Miss got slammed with penalties and Hugh got hit with a show cause they'd not owe him a dime if they fired him. (using OM as an example, but it would technically apply to all schools. you usually owe the buyout if you fire a guy for on field reasons only)

Sumlin is 10 million after this season, 5 million after next season. Given how the team has looked, it's highly doubtful that we'll need to get rid of him after this season.

Couldn't you say the same thing after the last couple of seasons? A&M seems to be good at fast starts and then crawl to the finish line.

Does this mean Stoops will return? 18 million is a whole lot of cash. But how can you bring him back the way this season is going?

You're ruining the "LSU can't afford to fire Miles" trolls with this shite.

I don't see anyway Les Miles survives this season. Congrats.

You guys are actually a well balanced quality team this year. Unless he does something really dumb, I don't know why you guys wouldn't want to keep Summlin.

How much of that is actual cash tho?

Take food allowance away and that probably to Butch Jones type number.

Wonder how they figured this.

I'm still under the impression that he is owed the full value of his remaining contract, which currently is ~$55 million.

Not that it matters. He won't ever be fired. He won't ever give them a reason.

I will readily admit I'll celebrate the day Ms. Terry convinces him it's time to hang it up.

Uh huh.

Sexton's personal relationships pay dividends, as Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart said he wouldn't have included coach Mark Stoops in last year's interview process if Sexton hadn't brought him forward. (Barnhart had no idea Stoops would be interested in the Wildcats head-coaching opening, but he consulted with Sexton, with whom he's been friends with for 20 years.)

The dude runs college football, period.

I still don't understand why schools continue to go after his clients. AU has been screwed over by Sexton multiple times, and we still keep hiring his boys (or trying to).

From all indications Mason's number is very reasonable after this season. I'm not sure what the AD will do if the season continues to go south. 3-9 or worse and I think you absolutely have to make a change, 4-8 or better and it depends on how competitive the team looks in SEC games.

If the talk of building a new stadium is real and not just lip service you have to have a team that can at least generate fan interest. Year 3 of Mason and no overall improvement and I think you see Vandy make a change, particularly if his D keeps getting torched like it has the last 2 weeks.
