Count Alabama coach Nick Saban among the critics of Georgia’s decision to fire coach Mark Richt after a 9-3 season.

“I don’t know what the world is coming to in our profession,” Saban said when asked about Richt’s firing Sunday night on an SEC Championship game teleconference. “Mark Richt has been a really good coach and a really positive person in our profession for a long, long time. I think when you win nine games that’s a pretty good season, especially with the body of work he has been able to put together there.”

Alabama will play Florida in the SEC title game Saturday at the Georgia Dome.

Georgia’s Oct. 3 loss to the Crimson Tide in Sanford Stadium began a three-losses-in-four-games stretch that apparently decided Richt’s professional future with his bosses at UGA.

“I hate to see people that have the character and the quality and ability to affect young people in a positive way, like Mark Richt, not be a part of our profession,” Saban said. “And people don’t realize the importance of some of the other things that go into college coaching, whether it’s helping develop young men as people, helping them develop careers off the field by graduating from school.

“We all get it: We know we have to win games. But winning nine games is not bad. And he certainly won a lot of games for a long time, and I hate to see these kinds of things.”

So Saban is saying that Georgia is not a program where championships can be won? Sure sounds like it.

Life Goes On.

Richt should take his alma mater's job and bring the U back to relevancy. Don't feel bad for him

Georgia will not be able to land a coach better than Richt this year. LSU figured that out and backed off of firing Les.

No, sounds more like every team can't win a championship ever year and a 9+ win season is still a good season, not a 6-6 or worse season that justifies change.

Coaches take up for other coaches. It's what they do.

Have you looked at their wins? It all about perspective. I think 9 wins is a good season when at least a few of those wins are against teams with above .500 records. UGA didn't get those. They couldn't take advantage of some pretty dark times in the SEC east and have only been in contention for a national championship 1 time in his career. When your rivals (Auburn & Florida) are playing for and winning multiple titles in your coaches tenure, it's time to go. I think Georgia makes a great hire and will make the SEC even more competitive.

The timing was right to fire Richt after UCF ended his season with a losing season.

The expectation level of continual improvement has come to absurd levels across athletics.

Who are the great hires available, and you have to scratch every head coach's name from power 5.

Unless it's Tom Herman or MAYBE Kyle Whittingham, lateral move at best or potential step down.

Was the loss of Chubb taken into account?

Wonder if Richt would be out of a job if Murray had clocked the ball instead of trying to run that pass play in the '12 SECCG?

Too many power 5 jobs are open this year.

Meaning that enough are open to cause a power 5 school to overpay for the up and comer or over pay for the average coach at a lower tier power 5 school.

Its so in favor of the coaches this year that schools like Minnesota and Illinois named their interim HCs as new HCs...

Hate to give alabama any credit but its Sabans frickin fault. If he would have dropped an SEC championship to them in the last 10 frickin years maybe he would still be there. Saban is hogging all the fun and is getting people fired.

Upon further review they only played in 1... saban is a shite. I gave too much credit

He is also giving some opportune coaches massive pay raises with buyouts that mean job security for the schools who are poors like aggy and OM.
