One week after LSU coach Les Miles voiced his support for Steve Spurrier's proposal for the SEC to choose division champions based exclusively on division record, Nick Saban politely did the opposite.

Speaking to reporters before Tuesday's Crimson Caravan stop at the Marriott Shoals Hotel & Spa in Florence, Saban said he understood the South Carolina coach's logic behind his opinion, but couldn't get behind an idea that essentially eliminated the importance of cross-divisional games.

"I just think that's one of those things that's not always going to be controlled," Saban said. "It's not manipulated with who you play. We have a rotation, we have to go through it.

"I think the other division games you play on the other side are important to our fans and there's a lot of tradition involved in some of those games. I think if you minimize the importance of those games, that wouldn't be in the best interest of our league."

Saban acknowledged that it was probably a little unfair that certain teams from the SEC East had to match up with one or more of the dominant SEC West trio of LSU, Alabama and Arkansas last season, while others avoided all three. SEC East division champion Georgia didn't play any of the three during the regular season while South Carolina matched up with just Arkansas, its permanent -- for now -- cross-divisional opponent.

"Obviously, they had a better chance to win the championship," Saban said, speaking broadly and not specifically about Georgia.

Didn't know we got rid of permanent cross-division opponents...

It's total bullshite how Georgia has gotten a much easier road to the SECC than USC last season and same for this season.

SC fans are pissed about last year. that's just how the rotation worked out. what we're pissed about is the when the SEC revised the schedule, it changed UGA's @Alabama game to a home game against Ole Miss, while SC lost its home game w/ Miss. State and instead got a trip to Baton Rouge. then on top of that, they satisfied Georgia request to move the SC game to later in the season so they can better prepare. Now SC has UGA, @LSU, @Florida, Tennessee in back to back weeks in the middle of the season. UGA also got their bye after week 6, perfectly in the middle of the season. how convenient!

Is there room for a "Saban says" board. I think it can be squeezed in over there.

So a 5-3 SEC team wins the division over a 7-1 SEC team, potentially? Stupid..

What I love about the SEC is that We get to live off the accomplishments of other teams and we don't even have to try it just happens.

If division record doesn't determine division champ then get rid of divisions. Spurrier is right and it's wrong when a team wins their division simply because their cross division schedule was easier than another teams in their division yet they did the same (and lose h2h) or worse than that team in their own division.

Spurrier is correct. Division champions is self explanatory, you are the best in your division. It shoudnt have anything to do with cross-conference play

Spurrier lost the ability to gripe when his team lost at home to Auburn.

If it's a conference game, it counts towards the conference record. Conference record decides who is the best team from each division in that conference. If you don't count conference games, they lose a lot of meaning and the season is made that much more dull.
