A different side of Saban

A lot of people bash the guy because he left their school, or beat their school, or said he wasn't leaving Miami. People jokingly call him Satan and claim he's only money motivated.

However, when a guy does something like this fully thinking it will remain private and will not benefit him at all, you see a little more about the type of person he is.

Probably best posted on the Alabama board, but some others that understand there is more to life than football may appreciate it too.

I don't think he's a dick like some people, I just think he has some social anxiety that was never diagnosed.

Classy thing for Saban to do.

Sometimes I think Nick Saban cares, and sometimes I think he doesn't. I don't know, really. Nobody on this board knows him personally, so we all form opinions of him based on fanhood, rumors, etc...

The one thing I can't get out of my head is him stepping over a convulsing player while he was head coach of the Miami Dolphins.

Either way, I'm glad he took the time to give an uplifting message to Kerry Goode. People talk about how bad cancer is, but you can beat cancer. ALS is like a ticking time bomb and I fricking hate it.

Good luck to Kerry Goode. May God bless him.

God Bless Kerry Goode ... ALS is a rough way to go. I've lost two old friends to Lou Gehrig's and it is devastating to everyone directly involved.

I've got pretty bad social anxiety myself and some of Saban's mannerisms remind me a bit of my own. Though I'm not one of the greatest football coaches of all time.

Agreed. It's horrible.

But...you can't take away memories!

Do a little research into this story. Saban gets a bad rap because he is a hard arse who yells a lot but he is a genuinely good person.

That story began with Heath Evans. Jason Taylor told a different version:

Two sides to every story

quote:

After the interview, Taylor corroborated Saban’s version of events.

“He cared deeply for his players. That’s why hearing the Heath Evans/Jeno James story bothers me,” Taylor said. “I was with Nick and Jeno and a handful of other players after the fact. But it did not happen the way it was reported. That’s not true.”

Also, from same article addressing the whole "Not gonna be the coach at Alabama" talk. Didn't address with media (didn't have to) but did keep his players aware (not Bobby Petrino leave in middle of the night type deal):
quote:

“We understood that that train was coming down the track,” Taylor said of Saban leaving. “From day 1 he was up front with some guys in talking about it, kinda getting their feelings. I spoke with him at length about it on several different occasions up until the 12th hour when he finally made the decision to go. I was on the phone with him late that night.”

Any way. This isn't about that. It's about Saban doing something for Kerry Goode that obviously meant a lot to Kerry to the point that he (Kerry) wanted to share it.

My aunt died of ALS. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

What people find miserable about Saban is that he rarely has anything good to say, despite his tremendous success. He's just comes off as a sour puss.

What? He definitely cares. He cares a lot. Dude does more good and uplifting things for people than 99% of the people on this earth. If you can't see that, then you really aren't paying attention. broham.

I think Saban is a standup person.

He and I belong to the same church. I'm sure he is a humble sinner no different than the rest of us when he kneels down to pray.

But I'm of the similar opinion as the Catholics at St. Michael the Archangel in Auburn:

quote:

The War Eagle Reader came across a message on the marquee of Saint Michael The Archangel Catholic Church earlier today in Auburn.

It read: "Support the ban on slingshots." -- Goliath

quote:

"Coach Saban is a good Catholic, actually, a daily mass Catholic. But on the field, he's more of a Goliath."

LINK

Coach Saban is a great Catholic. But on gameday, we'll have our slingshots out.

Thanks for posting this topic. My brother-in-law played D-III football at a small Christian college in Buffalo in the late 80's/early '90s. He had two former teammates die because of this devastating disease. I remember reading years ago that athletes were prone to get it from the use of pesticides on grass fields. I'm not sure of the counter measures that sports teams and field managers use now. It is such a crippling disease and it destroys the central nervous system. I'm not a big fan of Saban but that was a great move. As a coach, his success brings hatred from opposing fan bases. All successful coaches get that. But they are only human after all. Classy move by CNS.

Of course you would take Heath Evans's word as gospel. An Aub that Saban cut.

Much like Steve Gleason in New Orleans, I wish nothing but hope and for peace for Kerry and his family.
Saban visited Children's Hospitals in Baton Rouge and NOLA, so I know he has done humanitarian work.

Your post is welcome here. Much like Sid, there is not much hope for Kerry. ALS is a terrible disease. I pray for strength during this time for him and his family. And much like Les Miles, Nick Saban is a good person. Most people only see him while stalking the sideline during a game and may have a different opinion of him as a person. This says it all.
