Haters gonna hate( & I am one), but you have to respect the focus, drive, and level of attention Saban gives to the job...

An interview with Kirby Smart on 680 the fan in ATL...
quote:

See, everybody’s talking about the score, we were leading, but we weren’t leading," Smart said. "We had not slowed them down. We had two red area stops, which were six points, could have been 14. We had a turnover, we stripped a ball. We had not slowed them down, and I’m thinking this could be 21 but it’s six, 21-6, could be 21-21. And then they scored right before the half, which we thought was deadly. They had a good two-minute drive and scored, and I knew that we were in trouble.”

quote:

To better understand how Ohio State attacked the typically stout Alabama defense, Nick Saban brought in Houston head coach and former Ohio State offensive coordinator Tom Herman to breakdown how he approached attacking the Tide’s defense.
“I’ll tell you the best thing we did, and I give Coach (Nick) Saban a lot credit, we went directly to (Herman). We flew him in. We said “Hey, look, we want to meet with you. You know us better than anybody. You spent four weeks getting ready for us. What’s our tendencies? What do we do wrong? What do you think?’ And he was honest with us, he just told us what he thought. It was very valuable for us.”

I wonder what would compel him to offer that information up. I guess flattery.

I'm sure that there was a nice consultation fee involved.

Maybe Herman thinks Meyer is a dick and doesn't mind screwing him over.

I have absolutely no proof of that, but I'm butthurt over the loss, so that's what I'm going with.

I mean - why the hell would Herman agree to this? Probably pissed off his OSU peeps who could potentially face Saban again in the playoff, and what will happen if Herman is playing Saban in a big game sometime soon?

This is less about Saban giving attention to his job and more about Herman being an idiot. If you have an advantage over someone you don't go and immediately tell them why that advantage exists.

It's and at all levels. Saban will probably give him a little insight too. Not like Herman wont get anything out of this.

Now he can tell recruits in Houston that even the great Nick Saban needed his coaching advice.

Not a bad selling point, I guess, and it's rather doubtful UH plays the Tide anytime soon.

Like him or not when you get beat you want to know what went wrong. Personally I thought that our guys didn't prepare as much as they needed, I think they were complacent thinking that a third string QB couldn't win. I don't think that they were prepared was that he was Camesque in how he ran. I think I was more about what another competitor saw as our weakness and how they exploited it and beat us.

JMO.... Unlike fans who hate each other, the players & coaches are kinda a fraternity... The players don't hate each other in most cases, hell most of them know each other & know what they've all been thru to get to their level. I'm assuming it's the same with coaches as it is in any business, you always gotta network, talk etc...

Tons of staff's visit other schools every year to exchange ideas & methods...

Several reasons. One, he probably got paid. Two, if he ever wants Saban or Smart to consult for him they will absolutely do it. Three, coaching is all about networking. Herman may be out of a job in three years and Saban and Smart have worked with him and know him now. A few years ago the Oklahoma staff flew to Tuscaloosa to consult on some things. This stuff happens a lot.

What's funny is you could swap out Meyer with Saban and this sentence still makes sense.

I think this is a bit of an overreaction. its not like they just plain out got beat. osu made the couple of plays they needed to in order to secure victory.

Potential positives for Herman:

1. Good press for recruiting
2. Veteran coach with ties in college and NFL owes you a favor
3. Get to pick the brain of a great defensive coach and recruiter
4. Get tips for running a program for a guy with zero high level HC experience

Gee, I wonder why Herman agreed to come meet with Saban?
