Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said he “always knew” the game was big, but he couldn’t appreciate its true importance until accepting the head job at Alabama.

“Until you experience it firsthand, you really don’t understand the magnitude because you’re not really involved with the people who are involved in the game on both sides,” he said during a Wednesday night presser.

The coach listed the game alongside USC-UCLA, Ohio State-Michigan, Alabama-Auburn and Texas-Texas A&M as one of the country’s most cherished rivalries.

Alabama will take on Tennessee in Tuscaloosa this Saturday afternoon (3:30 pm ET, CBS).

“In rivalry games, I’m never really satisfied with where we are (before the game begins),” Saban said. “Rivalry games are always a little bit different.”

Bama and Tenn fans try waay too hard to convince people that this is a rivalry game.

Maybe top ten but no way this is a top five rivalry

Then why is TSIO played on the fourth Saturday?

Not much of a rivalry.

It's this shitty rivalry that makes LSU have to play Florida every year.

Tennessee sucks, not a rivalry.

Rivalry games don't have long winning streaks by either side.

Blah, blah.

Just wanted to get most of the typical responses out of the way.

By listing those five games and leaving out USC ND and Texas Oklahoma, he loses all creditability.

Great rivalry but the name needs to be fixed.

Bama loves the rivalry because of an almost assured victory, Tennessee loves it because whoever the coach is can justify losing to Bama to the fanbase to buy more time.

Then what was our reason for loving it between 1994-2006?

LSU's GOAT coach informing the masses about which rivalries are important yet they still say he's wrong.
