"Earlier, we looked at which teams we thought were the most undervalued in ESPN's early 2017 Football Power Index.

The FPI isn't the be-all and end-all, but it does provide us with a more analytical view of the sport. This year, Alabama is the favorite to win the SEC. Last year, LSU was. This year, six SEC teams are ranked inside the top 25 of the FPI, with three in the top 10 -- Alabama, Auburn and LSU. All 14 make it inside the top 46.

Something has to give, right? Well, our SEC writers are here to tell you "Not so fast!" when it comes to the value of some of these teams."

Agree with Greg Ostendorf's assessment of the F1orida Gators

quote:

Greg Ostendorf: Credit Jim McElwain for winning the East in his first two seasons at Florida. That’s not easy to do. But let’s be honest about how this team won. It was the defense. The Gators were stingy. They forced turnovers. And now, a year after losing four players to the NFL, that same defense is losing nine starters from this past season. Not to mention, the architect of the group -- defensive coordinator Geoff Collins -- left to become the head coach at Temple. Maybe Feleipe Franks is the real deal and Florida finally will have an offense. Or maybe this is the year the Gators take a step back. With both Michigan and Florida State on the nonconference slate, I think it will be difficult for this team to reach the FPI's eight projected wins.

Ostendorf is the best but he is a graduate from Bama.

I don't even care. I rarely see pieces by him that aren't well done. Considering his alma mater is the class of CFB, he does an impressive job of staying fair & balanced + pretending like the other team can compete

if you are referring to Auburns name in there, then yes. They are scurred because they did it before with Johnson and its easy to use that as an example

I don't care that he went to Bama either. I guess you know that by now.

Let's actually be honest and admit that it's really because Tennessee has been focusing more on Life Championships than SEC East Championships.

There is so much more info with Stidham than we had with Johnson at the time JJ was named starter.

It's their company's own metric/computer system that ranks Auburn so high. Are they saying the ESPN power rankings are shite?

It's funny because when Stidham was with Baylor most people would expect him to get chewed up and spit out by the elite SEC defenses, but now that he transferred to Auburn people expect him to light up these same elite defenses.

What Baylor QB in the last 5 years has sucked against Big 12 defenses? None, okay then what makes you think Stidham is a special talent?

He's not, and he'll be exposed.

half the league is over-valued. They pack these things full of P5 schools and inevitably, the bottom half of each league falls out over the course of the season.

What are y'all returning on defense? With Stidham, I figured you'd have a pretty good team next year.

I may be in the minority, but I've never thought that the gun-slinging QBs of the Big 12 from places like Baylor, Texas Tech, etc. would get chewed up by an SEC defense. The issue with those teams is usually their offensive line up against the elite defensive lines of the SEC.

Baylor, Texas Tech, etc. have done an excellent job finding great players at the skill positions. Its just that those programs can't ever seem to sign any elite linemen, which is where the alleged mismatch against the SEC comes in.

We lose some talent on the DL but our defense is certainly not going to be a liability. Our team is actually well-rounded and not even close to being similar to the 2015 Auburn football team which started off ranked too high.

Funny,

I've always thought Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, Baylor, West Virginia, TCU, have all had successful QBs because they play against shite defenses all year, rather than them all recruiting great QBs every year.

It's weird too because of all those elite QBs you don't see them lighting up the NFL.

If you go back to 2012 and look at all the occasions in which a Big 12 team with a Top 50 Passing Offense played against an SEC team with a Top 50 defense, it results in 9 total games:

2012 Texas vs. Ole Miss
2013 Oklahoma St. vs. Mississippi St.
2014 West Virginia vs. Alabama
2014 Texas Tech vs. Arkansas
2014 TCU vs. Ole Miss
2015 Texas Tech vs. LSU
2015 Oklahoma vs. Tennessee
2016 Oklahoma vs. Auburn
2016 TCU vs. Georgia

In those 9 games, the Big 12 QB had the following average statistics:

Completions: 207
Attempts: 335
Completion Percentage: 61.8%
Yards per Game: 259.3
Touchdowns per Game: 2.6
Interceptions per Game: 0.9
QB Rating: 138.2

Those are pretty solid statistics considering their SEC opponents had an average Total Defense ranking of #23 each time.

Which proves why in my mind, the Big 12 has very good Quarterbacks.... they just lack quality linemen, IMO. On both sides of the ball for that matter.

Does Oklahoma v Bama in 2013 not count? Could've sworn Oklahoma had a good passing offense the whole year not just against Bama.
