Rivalries gone too far?

Why do people of opposing teams feel the need to physically or verbally attack opposing fan members?After the Ole Miss vs. Texas game (not really a rivalry, but a good example) an Ole Miss fan was brutally beaten. Referees begin receiving death threats. Coaches facing unemployment over one game, and now an Alabama fan shot after the LSU vs Alabama game. How can people address this issue without limiting the freedom of opposing fan bases? Or should people just sort it out amongst themselves?

funny but true story from this past weekend in Tuscaloosa. On Saturday, you had the typical college age kid mouthing off. No biggy, have learned to ignore it.
On Sunday, wife wanted to see the UA campus so drove the RV and parked it on campus so we could walk around. Most folks were nice, but had the occasional "Came back for more" "You didn't get your arse kicked enough last night?" "At least you guys crossed the 50 last night"
My wife asked is it like this all the time when you go to an away game. I told her yes, but did you notice anything? She said I sort of noticed they were all college age kids. I told her that is right, notice anything else and she said No, what am I missing?
Told her, they all talk shite but keep walking away as they are mouthing off

Sometimes, pathetic as it may be, fans see a college football team as an extension of themselves and measure if their school's success and their own self worth. It gets so obsessive that when someone has a difference of opinion or makes a playful jab, it becomes personal to them and all of the sudden you are attacking their school, state, region, family heritage etc and the less intelligent resort to violence.
It's sad that so many take football as a life or death event when it's only a glorified game. If college football is someone's life, there's a good chance that person didn't have a life to begin with. Just my two pennies

Sorry but no American rivalry has even come close to too far.... not even the ones with Oakland, Detroit or LSU involved.

While there have always been a few hostile fans, I do believe the number is increasing.
I attribute a lot of this to the general decline of manners and the increase in hostile language experienced over the last few years. Too many kids today interact as nameless, faceless entities through computers, cellphones, etc... They are used to calling each other names and saying classless things with no real repercussions.
That just fuels more hate and eventually leads to physical confrontations. Throw in some alcohol and it becomes even more volatile.

That's the thing. If the article is accurate, who would be 'taunting'? An LSU fan? We just got beat easily. An AU or UT fan? It might be just random. Guy was out there 'Roll Tide' and somebody drunk didn't want to hear it. Hopefully they will catch them.

There's good apples on apples trees, but unfortunately you've got get through the bad apples too. It's the apples with worms that really can mess things up for many apples though.

You damn right! If the Aubites burn the Hardins bacon wrapped filet they bought me and don't have the pontoon boat in the water down on lake Martin Friday I may go postal!
