The flags were taken down from Alabama's state capital by the governor quietly and without incident.

Why would Saban need to speak out?

The confederate flag seems to be a bigger issue in Mississippi, South Carolina and Louisiana.

Has nothing to do with Alabama or Saban.
That's like asking Jerry Seinfeld to comment about Middle East foreign policy...one has nothing to do with the other.

Nine, innocent God-loving people are dead and two weeks later we're still talking about a piece of cloth. TPTB have succeeded once again.... i believe it's Alinsky's Rule #12, right?

Think about the people who fight for the right to wave the Nazi flag around, and understand that you aren't that far off.

The South was fighting for the right to own slaves, and y'all want to romanticize this by pretending it was some noble cause that has to be honored 150 years later.

This is something no SEC head coach should be addressing. It's a no win for any of them and they don't need to. But why single out Saban when most of our coaches are coaching in the deep south? Quit trolling OP.

Exactly, and both took a humiliating arse whooping as well.

Why be proud of a loser?

I truly feel bad for all the people who don't understand this.

It was about states' rights: yeah the right of states to permit slavery

It was about economics: yeah the economics of free labor based on slavery

It was about culture/social differences: yeah the culture and societal structure of owning people of a different race

The confederate flag is not the thing on top of the Dukes of Hazzard car, it's not the thing on the back of some dudes truck. That is the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia and later Tennessee. Typically people misidentify and fly the Battle Flag of Tennessee ( it is longer and more flag like).

Also, SC is in the shite because they started flying the flag over the capital in 1962... gee what was happening then?

As to the OP, Saban is probably smart to say nothing as long as he is not asked. I am not sure there is a lot of upside to personally stepping into a hornet's nest.

Let me guess you think the North were the "good guys"?

There's no reason to speak out against the flag. It didn't do anything. More slaves served under the good old American flag than the 'rebel' flag.

Your argument is disingenuous at best. You are trying to tie the flag to only the events of the Civil War. The truth is, esp in SC, the flag became the standard for opposition to the Civil Rights movement. There is truth to the argument the flag being flown is not the Confederate Flag. It is instead the "we will never yield to desegregation" flag.

Did you know that the swastika was originally a symbol of the hooked cross for good luck? Do you really think young racists today fly that flag because of that meaning?

So you can't tell the difference between these so called groups (KKK, white supremacists), and a war memorial for fallen soldiers. Give me a break.

Nice try, but I'm a little past your good guys vs. bad guys dynamic.

Just know, you're fighting a losing battle (one that was actually lost 150 years ago). So justify and rationalize all you want.

Just answered his question without trying to.

There were many people who thought the US were the wrong side of the revolution. I guess them dying for what they believed in didn't mean as much as the ones who died fighting for the side you supported.

Regardless of who "won" the heritage argument is valid. Taking the stance that slavery was only in the south is bogus. The civil war started because the south was getting rich while the north was jealous of that. Both the north and the south had slaves of all colors. All colors owned slaves. In fact, slavery was alive in the north well After it was abolished in the south. Of you are offended by something that happened 150 years ago that's a you problem, not a problem of people who embrace where they came from

No I am not fighting a battle at all, the facts are clear. The North is not innocent in any of it. If you want we can handle all that through email.

Basically, flying the 'confederate' flag is saying, not only did we used to own black slaves, but that is a time I am particularly proud of by evidence of my displaying this flag.

I was going to use the word 'ignorantly', but the connotation is so negative. There are a lot of people that use the flag with no ill intent and don't know/think about it otherwise.
