If hurts becomes a good-great passer in these next two years the sky's the limit for that kid. I def don't want to see a dynamic QB paired with that defense.... could spell doom for the SEC..... its already is too much to deal with.

it will be interesting to see what they do on offense this coming year

Unless Jake transfers if he doesn't win the starting job, then he is returning.

Honestly thought he was senior last year, give him some protection and Hogs could be dangerous

That and tackling on defense

This is exactly what they say about Hurts. THOUGH I will say Hurts > Etling by a wide margin.

Hurts in Les' offense would have been tough to watch. Think Jordan Jefferson. I think he'd do well in Canada's (at least from what I've read which is all I really have to go on). That that for what it's worth.

Vs "ranked" opponents (I think time of game)

1. Stephen Johnson (3 games) - 149.13
2. Austin Allen (4 games) - 129.31
3. Jake Bentley (3 games) - 121.51
4. Jalen Hurts (6 games) - 119.16
5. Sean White (3 games) - 114.66
6. Danny Etling (4 games) - 109.43
7. Jacob Eason (2 games) - 105.92
8. Kyle Shurmur (2 games) - 94.67
9. Nick Fitzgerald (3 games) - 86.88
10. Drew Lock (3 games) - 77.47

just saw this one as well

Stidham 2 games 160.75

I'd say he is pretty much a lock, unless white has been juicing and had a bionic arm installed. It will be interesting to see against more capable D's and our new OC's style

Will it even matter in the Malzhan system?

I think it would have been worse than JJ. Hurts in a Miles/Cam offense would be a disaster. Zero underneath routes and only 15 yard+ crossing routes. Yikes

ETA: Based just on Freshman Hurts.

Nick Fitzgerald is the best Quarterback in the SEC and maybe even the country. Thanks to Dan Mullen.

You put SR on there so it confused me, my years were as of last year.

He's a talented kid. He's also the worst pure passer in the league (yes, worse than Hurts). And he's certainly not the best QB in the country.

I expect Hurts to be an adequate passer this year. Not Peyton Manning, but average at least. My rough comp (throwing wise) would be Lamar Jackson from year 1 to year 2.

If he doesn't make a jump between FR and SO year then he never will.

Let's not bring uncomfortable facts into the discussion. He's gritty and a gamer. Best in the country!!!

I think the problem with your position on this matter, and most of the posters in this thread is you guys totally undervalue, or don't value potential running threat from the qb position at all.

Avoiding sacks, extending plays, picking up first downs scrambling, just plain getting yards on designed runs...

To be blunt no one beats Alabama, for example, by running the ball down their throat. Except LSU, and that not very often.

But they've also lost a number of games, including a couple of championship games to teams with mobile qb's who could pass (at least some).

It's no secret how well Alabama has recruited. Those teams run an offense like Stanford, Michigan, Georgia, or ... LSU and they get eaten alive instead of beating them.

I'm not saying that you do not need to be able to throw the ball.

But I'd take Steven Johnson's arm and his legs, over Eason's arm alone every time.

This game has changed. These spread offenses are not stopped by defenses. Unless the defense has a huge talent differential over the offense, and that differential is unrealistic in a championship game or against other elite programs.

When they are stopped it is basically because they have a bad day and shoot themselves in the foot.

It's as plain as the nose on anyone's face. Teams like Georgia, and LSU (under Miles at least) aren't keeping up with current events.

Because they'd be a heck of a lot tougher to beat if they signed and played any of the multitude of stellar pass run options Louisiana and Georgia put out in such quantity instead of insisting on a dropback offense with a qb with a big arm.

Good shite, I agree with every bit of that. All y'all really need out of Etling is him to be serviceable and not turn the ball over.

That and give him more than s Septequazillionth of a second to throw against the Red Elephants..

Silly me. How could I forget Auburn and the run the ball off-tackle dropback offense Malzahn is known for.

You'd understand why he does that if you saw what statues Cam Newton and Nick Marshall were in the backfield.
