Retiring the crystal football trophy

Not that I'd given it any thought; but I didn't realize until last night's broadcast that the crystal football was being retired, along w the BCS.
I think this is a mistake. It's too bad something can't be negotiated. The crystal trophy has become an iconic award--I hate to see it go the way of the dinosaur. I can't imagine any replacement being nearly as great.

how far does the crystal trophy date back? I believe BYU has one...I'm not sure if they got one retroactively for their 1984 season.

Late 80s, early 90s. BYU would have won it too soon.

UGA has one for the 1980 season. It may have been awarded retroactively like you said

You know they will be ugly just like when the NFL changed the Lamar Hunt and Halas trophies to their current abomination forms.

It's sad that they are retiring it,but aleast all the teams that won it gets to keep theirs

I'm pretty bummed about this too. There nothing like collecting crystal balls. They will most certainly frick up the design of the new one.

So how many actual national titles does Bama have compared to the faux national titles they claim?
