Given the news surrounding Maurice Smith and Alabama not allowing him to transfer to Georgia, some fans have wondered why Alabama head coach Nick Saban allowed wide receiver Chris Black to transfer to Missouri.
Black, like Smith, was set to graduate from Alabama and play immediately. Like Smith, Black wanted to go to an SEC school. But Black got his wish in part because of when he filed his release from Alabama
According to a report from Matt Zenitz of AL.com Black’s request to be released was filed the week of Alabama’s game against LSU. The Crimson Tide were ranked No. 4 and getting set to host the undefeated and No. 2 ranked Tigers when Black filed his request to be released.
Per an NCAA Bylaw, schools have seven days to respond to a player’s request to release and transfer. If a school does not respond within those seven days, a player is given a full release, meaning they can transfer anywhere.
Alabama never responded to Black’s request, thus allowing him to transfer to any school. Given the Crimson Tide were playing LSU, Black’s request fell through the cracks. Per Zenitz, Saban didn’t want Black to have that ability but he ultimately had no say. Smith’s request was responded to and he has been told he cannot transfer to any SEC school.
So while LSU may not have beaten Alabama, the Tigers did get a small victory over the Crimson Tide in somewhat allowing Black to transfer.

The only mistake here is transferring from Alabama to Mizzou

I was hoping the paperwork mishap would have been related to Saban or the Alabama AD somehow forgetting Mizzou was in the SEC

Sounds like Smith shot himself in the foot here.

Not necessarily. But this should end the narrative that Saban "just let Black transfer to Missouri because they had no shot of meeting in the SEC Championship game unlike Georgia."

Wow, it just keeps getting worse for lil Nicky poo. He didn't see Mizzou as a threat so it "fell through the cracks".

Why would this disprove that?

If Black was any good, it wouldn't have slipped through the cracks.
I get why Saban doesn't want Smith to transfer to Georgia, but this is confirmation of the difference in the two situations, in a way.

How can this be???!!!
We are constantly told by all you Bama fans that Saban is omniscient and omnipotent concerning his program. Nothing, not even a transfer to lowly Missouri, could possibly have escaped his steely gaze and awesome powers.

The paperwork came in, there was a brief back and forth on whether Missouri is in the SEC, they went to lunch, and forgot about it.

If they had announced their intentions at the same time, or under similar circumstances, I could see your argument.
One submitted his paperwork during the week of the biggest home game of the season last year. The other waited until after the season during the quietest time of the year.
Big difference.

Don't you have bigger things to worry about than Big Brother's transfer situations?

Funny since Mizzou has been there more than Georgia since joining the league.
Ho hum...

somewhat, but with a seven day window and being done during an important time, I can see the two as completely different.
Timing is everything here.
