Not an exact science, but a look at some numbers from last year to this year to see what type of results the new DCs have garnered across the league.
First some raw numbers. First column is 2014, second 2015.
Auburn (Will Muschamp)
Total D 398.5----446.5
Scoring D 26.7----29.4
YPC 4.45----4.83
YPP 5.67----5.79
TFL/G 6.31----4.5
aTm (John Chavis)
Total D 450.8----398.3
Scoring D 28.1----24.6
YPC 5.01----4.88
YPP 5.91----5.45
TFL/G 5.85----9.38
LSU (Kevin Steele)
Total D 316.8----315.9
Scoring D 17.5----22.6
YPC 4.32----3.25
YPP 4.87----4.81
TFL/G 5.85----6.14
Mizzou (Barry Odom)
Total D 345.8----282.1
Scoring D 21.1----12.5
YPC 3.51----2.92
YPP 4.82----4.03
TFL/G 7.43----9.0
Miss St (Manny Diaz)
Total D 424.4----375.3
Scoring D 21.7----17.8
YPP 5.65----4.91
YPC 4.18----3.82
TFL/G 6.54----7.88
Florida (Geoff Collins)
Total D 329.8----303
Scoring D 21.1----15.5
YPP 4.55----4.66
YPC 3.17----3.43
TFL/G 7.25----7.25
*Rankings*
6. Muschamp- Auburn has pretty much gotten worse across the board with Boom at the helm. YPP numbers are pretty much the same, but the defense does not seem to be creating as much havoc as evidenced by a pretty significant drop in TFL
5. Steele- Nothing really bad to say here. Run defense has gotten better, everything else has stayed pretty consistent. Giving up about 5 more points per game though. Bend is about the same, break is up a little bit.
4. Collins- Has more or less held serve, and that isn't a knock as the defense was very good last year. Little worse on YPP, but a vastly improved offense has helped their defense not face as many plays and has led to them being almost a TD a game better in Scoring D.
3. Diaz- Pretty damn tight with Chavis, but Im going to put him slightly behind here. Mainly because of the vast improvement on the aTm DL. However, a really nice job by Diaz as he has also improved the Dawg defense across the board.
2. Chavis- Across the board improvement. Especially along the defensive line. They are causing a lot more havoc and are not giving up as many big plays as they did last year.
1. Odom- Again, across the board improvement. Nearly a full yard better in YPP and shaved 9 PPG of the season average.
Still some football to be played, but just thought Id look into what was a hot topic this offseason. Thoughts? Disagreements with my rankings?

I thought he was brought in as Co DC?

Why didn't you include Collins at Fla?

I always look forward to a quality discussion when Chavis is involved.

Chavis & Odom have done a hell of a job.
Would you mind doing Geoff Collins?

To be fair, Ernie from Sesame Street could have improved A&M from last year.

Doesn't matter, he still sucks

A&M has improved under Chavis
LSU has dropped from 7th in the nation in points allowed to now around 36th compared to the same time last year. Pretty big decline

Or Diaz at State. They have got to be improved

We were pretty young and thin on the d line last year, but I'm just going to blindly assume that if Beckwith started from game one last year, the 'improvement' wouldn't be noteworthy

Didn't think of either. I'll do them. Anyone else I'm missing?

And LSU's drop has been with more experienced veterans. Could be a troubling sign IMO. All their DTs are back from last year. They only had to replace one guy on the line in DE Hunter. All the LBs are back from last year. Just about all their DBs are back from last year. They have more depth.
Just saying.
Just saying.

With a better record than last year. Just sayin.

It is a concern. We might have been undefeated and ranked #1 right now with Chavis instead of being undefeated and ranked #2.

The real test will come next year. I think the A&M defense next year is going to be really good. We lose virtually nothing but our two starting corners, one of whom was still a RB in July.

LSU (Kevin Steele)
Total D 316.8----315.9
Scoring D 17.5----22.6
YPC 4.32----3.25
YPP 4.87----4.81
TFL/G 5.85----6.14
How about that...
Steele really is > Chavis.

You are 50th in passing defense
This date last year LSU was 4th...
