With seven weeks in the books of the college football season, and a bevy of talk of draft-eligible quarterbacks on a week-to-week basis, we at PFF shift the focus those players who’s job it is to defend against quarterbacks. Cornerbacks are measured often times on the amount of interceptions they obtain over the course of a season, however with the advanced PFF coverage statistics at our hands, we take it a bit further than just interceptions. These 2018 draft-eligible cornerbacks have defended against the pass the best, in terms of passer rating when targeted through seven weeks of the NCAA season:

quote:

1. Levi Wallace, Alabama

Coverage snaps/completion %/passer rating: 206/29.0%/0.7

Alabama always has physically-gifted and technically sound cornerbacks and this year is no different. Wallace predominantly lines-up on the left side of the Alabama defense and has an impressive coverage stat line of only nine catches on 30 targets for 95 yards with three interceptions. Most impressively however, is Wallace’s impact on a quarterback’s performance as the passer rating when throwing into Wallace’s coverage is what appears to be a typo at only 0.7, a mark which ranks him No. 1 among all FBS draft-eligible cornerbacks and a firm hold at the top of this list.

2. Grant Haley, Penn State
3. Mazzi Wilkins, South Florida
4. Nate Meadors, UCLA
5. Kyzir White, West Virginia

Isn't he a walk on? If so, that's ridiculously impressive and I will be rooting for him.

I think so, and in a the era of Saban 4&5 star CB dynasty, that makes it that much more impressive. Big fan.

Yeah. He played high school ball in Arizona. How the two big schools in his home state missed on him is pretty damn incredible.

Exactly. You gotta have sack to walk on at Bama. Especially on defense. And he actually cracked the starting lineup and is killing it.

Thats confidence if I've ever seen it.

His dad was a huge Bama fan and passed that love on to Levi. Bama was his dream school and he came just as a student majoring in Business. His dad told him he believed in his ability as a player and encouraged him to walkon to give it a try. His dad died on the morning of his first A-Day as a member of the team, so now he continues to play as a way to honor his dad.

If you read this and aren't a Levi Wallace fan then you have no heart

Another great article about Wallace and further explains his dad's connection to Bama

Just shows that you don't have to have the most elite 40 time and vert, you can be the smartest and best technician. Don't know if he can continue that in the pros (wouldn't bet against him at this point though), but he's been an incredibly pleasant surprise. Lose Marlon Humphrey to the 1st round and he is replaced with a former walkon who comes in and plays like the best cb in college football. He's had some questionable pi calls go against him too which just looked like really good plays, his numbers might have been even better.

I've become a big Levi fan. The effort he gives, the way he plays smart, and having learned more of his story make it impossible not to pull for the guy.
