This is not a "he sucks"/"he is a home run hire" thread or anything to do with grading the hire.

Can you think of an NBA (or NFL) coach who spent their entire career at the pro level to take a head coaching job at the college level?

The only ones I could come up with were
- Fred Hoiberg (Iowa State)
- Jim Mora Jr (UCLA - 1 year grad assistant at UW)

I'm sure there are others but I can't think of any in the last 5-10 years at big schools. There are some who only spent minimal time in college, but at least 2-3 years at some point.

He was an assistant at UNC for 2 years then was in the ABA/NBA for 11 years before he went to Kansas.

Even he worked in college from 1974-1984 before going to the NFL for 15+ years before going to Tech

Well when you take 3 years off with no NBA coaching interest, you have to find interest somewhere...

I do think yall will be able to get some Nola kids in hoops now with Johnson.

I'd take the high school coach any day before the pro coach!

I'm not going to say he was a hot commodity, but he was very close to landing 2-3 NBA jobs over that time period. Atlanta pretty much had a verbal agreement with him after we fired Woodson before ownership decided they wanted to hire someone on the cheap and hired Larry Drew from within.

You can continue to push this, but it won't make it true

Arnsparger coached as an assistant in college for almost 15 years, though it was 20 years before he went to LSU. I imagine college football in 1960 was a tad different than college football in 1985.

But that actually does fit the criteria.
