what is your opinion on the current plan to replace the trees?
do you like it or do you think a better option exists such as having a great looking replica of the trees?

i think it would have looked great to have big, beautiful replicas of those trees to carry on the traditons.

oh and frick updyke, i hope the devil puts him in the sunlight in hell about 5 feet away from an oasis of shaded trees with leaves of toilet paper and he can't move for eternity

They should make him wear this for a year.

I'm okay with it. I don't see much difference in how it was before, and really don't see where they're spending $1.2 million dollars, but whatever.

I can't really see much of a difference to what is there today, other than a little more concrete on the corner.

Me neither. That's why I said I don't know where 1.2 million dollars is going, other than to buy some contractor a new lake house.

I guess concrete and landscape supplies are pricey these days?

It is gubment work, so it is a bit pricey, but they are having to rip up quite a bit and be careful not to disturb the gates, they are removing a lot of dirt, new concrete and pavers, new trees(besides the two) and landscaping

I'm fine with the new plan. The corner kind of grew around the trees anyway, so trying to put new trees where the old ones were doesn't really make much sense. You're just putting trees there and a big part of their root base would be covered up by concrete.

It will get more of the crowd out of the intersection too by moving it back. They may not have to actually shut down the intersection after games anymore.

According to my former landscaping teacher, much of the cost will be due to tearing up the soil, and testing for traces of herbicide. To ensure they have replaced enough soil. Also replacement trees of this size cannot be purchased from a grower or nursery. So if the new trees are included in this price that explains a lot of the cost. If we use live oaks, we will have to go to the coast of Texas and offer a landowner a price he can't turn down and relocate the trees to Auburn. If we use overcup oaks we can shop locally and buy them from a more near homeowner, and relocate them. But either way, we have to move the trees which is very expensive.

I was hoping they would freeze the existing trees in carbonite like Han Solo. Now we just need to invent carbonite.

Part of the cost is the removal of a lot of dirt, etc.. there is still poison in the ground and can take up to 5 years for it to be safe. Still 1.2 million sounds high....

Updyke should have to pay for this. Or at least shovel out the bad dirt in an orange jump suit.

I think it will look great once they finish it. The design is pretty similar to what is there now, but there will be a larger area in front of the gates for people to gather and there will be semi-circular seating behind the gates. I'm hoping they get some great specimens for the new trees. Will be curious to see exactly what species they opt for. The live oaks are nice, but not ideally suited to the climate in Auburn.

It will suck for a couple of years before everything is finalized.
