One thing I have always been curious about is how USC fans view the Lou Holtz era? I was only 13 when he retired so I don't remember it to well. Was he loved, hated, or somewhere in between?

If they have any good sense whatsoever they would like and respect the hell out of it.

SC's program was dogshit for its entire existence minus about 3 seasons. While holtz did go 0-21, he DID at least raise their talent and raise their expectations. They went from losing to everyone by 30 every year to losing by 10, and also pulled some good upsets along the way. He was also able to get in a number of pretty high profile guys that most big SEC schools would have loved to have. They had won 1 (ONE!) bowl game in SCHOOL HISTORY prior to his arrival, he then won 2 new years day bowls back to back, and against Ohio State no less.

He should be seen similar to how donnan is for UGA. Awful, awful predecessor so started out with nothing, made great strides to elevate the program and build for the next guy, then the next guy took the program even higher.

Any SC fan who doesn't like and isn't grateful for the holtz era is under 20 years old.

Lou Holtz was a breath of fresh air for the program after the Bradstard Scott debacle. Biggest single-season turnaround in program history, he put us on the map. Spurrier made us a force to reckon with, and he wouldn't have been here if we hadn't hired Holtz first. I don't think you would find many Carolina fans who would say they wished Holtz had never coached here.

Was able to work a miracle, going from a 0-11 '99 and 21 game losing streaking going back into '98 to 8-4 with an Outback bowl victory over Ohio State. 9-3 and another Outback bowl victory over Ohio State in '01 had a lot of people looking up.

But that was his peak. He was able to jumpstart our program back but he wasn't ever able to elevate us beyond where we had been before

Mediocre is the term. Dogshit would be if '98 and '99 were the standard for our program, which they weren't.

His first season he wen't 0-11. In '98 we went 1-10 losing every game but the opener

Just a blatantly ridiculous claim since you clearly are not referring to just '98 and '99.

Loved. Now coach at clemson, Brad Scott, just about destroyed the program. Holtz took us from hot garbage to respectable. He was a good recruiter, a great motivator and very well liked.

Holtz was what we needed at the time. He brought us from the depths of hell that Fat Brad left us in and he turned us into a decent team in 2001 and 2002. I think we never get Spurrier if we never had Holtz and Holtz actually helped recruit Spurrier.

The only issue I have with Holtz was the amount of thugs he recruited but I guess it came with the territory in turning a program around. Had to take some risks to get things going but I don't think you'll find a real Carolina fan anywhere that isn't appreciative of good ole Lou.

This. He brought his team up to the valley acting like jackasses the next year (another loss 29-7). His last game

Loved him .... Lou was a great guy and he saved us from certain doom.

Skip is something else altogether though. Couldn't stand Skip.

We had history with Lou ... he started as a Gamecock and ended as a Gamecock. God Bless him forever and forever.

I don't have a fond memory of Holtz. His last three seasons at USC were garbage. His teams had a lot of thugs and marginal character types. Plus, he went 1-5 against Clemson in his 6 years here.

Was that the team that UGA shut out 30-0 in Death Valley?
