I was at the game so I didn't hear this until I watched a bit of the game last night....

... one of the guys on ESPN commented that the onside kick could have been a penalty if it was deemed that the BAma player pushed or advanced the ball further down the field.

I was blown away by this and would never think that it could be a penalty.

Looking at the play I feel that our guy could have committed that penalty and negated the only great play we had all game.

Can anyone offer insight on this? Would love to see an example where this penalty was called.

I have never seen it called.

The reasoning behind it is simple, in my opinion: the kicking team is running towards the stationary receiving team and, thus, has an extreme advantage if the ball is intentionally tipped past the receiving team, seeing as how they're the only group of players on the field currently in motion.

It was a penalty and so was the OM lineman downfield on that sucker pass where Kelly was almost over the line. Neither got called and they usually don't get called.

well set up your onside kick team to stop the advancing player. you are given 10 yards to defend it.

I imagine the hands team is more concerned with catching the football rather than blocking the kicking team.

It isn't my rule, brah. Don't be salty.

I didn't even bitch about it until I got on the internets after the game as I didn't even know the penalty existed when the play occurred.

I thought the question on that play was that if it was 'intentionally' tipped forward, the ball would have been placed at the spot where it was touched (still Alabama's ball), but not a penalty.
Obviously it was impossible to tell if he tipped it "forward" on purpose. I think he was just trying to make a play......

Probably because it would be hard as heck to determine intent. You're also running full tilt towards a ball and leaping for it. You'd be hard pressed to say a person wasn't trying to catch it if they do anything less than a veritable volleyball spike.

Incorrect.

It doesn't have to be as demonstrative as a "volleyball" spike to determine intent.

I'm not going to discuss intent with a non-attorney lay person.

think the rule iirc is intentionally batting the ball forward. on the onside kick in the ole miss/bama game, #7 looks like he's leaping just to get a hand on it, not so much intentionally batting the ball forward. it ended up happening that way, but i don't think the intent was there to warrant a penalty. in the steelers clip shown, the player obviously bats the ball forward, as he could have easily just attempted jump on the ball.

This isn't a court of law, so the example isn't even applicable.

That's okay though, because I'm not going to discuss common sense with... well, you get the point. ;)

Yep. The ball was already moving forward. Him hitting it knocked it upward while it continued moving forward.
