Last year most LSU fans thought that they were outclassed against Alabama. Based on 2016 so far, and especially the last 3 weeks, what is the thought on their progress and ability to win in the trenches in 2 weeks?

Thanks in advance.

There is no "win" in the trenches against Bama.

The OL and TEs will have to play flawless to give Etling a chance.

Our star fullback is healthy this year unlike last year against Bama. That was the key difference in the running attack

I guess a "win" is relative...

Can LSU get enough push in the run game to set up their deeper pass routes?... Probably not, but they look closer today than a month ago.

Probably hurt, but the offensive line lost their battles almost to a man the entire ballgame. Even a great fullback isn't going to cover that up.

I'D consider a win getting into 3rd and manageable or 2nd and 5s. LSU has to be able to be in down and distance to keep the whole playbook on the table.

Very easy to dominate LSU O line when the majority of blocking schemes were man to man, helmet to helmet in between the guards......

Should be fun now that we utilize the whole field again.

Not flawlessly. More like consistently without making any huge errors.

The OL run blocks really well. Assignments and pulls in the run game have gotten much better as the season has progressed. Pass blocking has ranged from decent to below average depending on opponent. Our guard play has been well above average to elite, and we have about four guys who can start there with no dropoff. Unfortunately that's because no one is all that good at tackle, so we just keep rotating the odd guard out there hoping to find a keeper.

I will say this, the MAJOR upgrade Etling provides over Harris is his ability to get rid of the ball quickly, and that's LSU's best bet to neutralize the Bama pass rush.

We were decimated with injuries to start the year. It looks like we have everyone back now, but I worry about their ability to gel, especially considering the zone blocking scheme.

They've been shuffling the OL around all season long, I dont even know if we'll see the same lineup we saw against Ole Miss against Bama.

Honestly this is Bama's biggest advantage over us by a longshot. I dont have a ton of confidence in our OL. It's not bad, the problem is your DL is just that good. Teheuma out at RT just scares me, he's not an OT. I think we need to call a very very smart game against Bama and not run play action every time we want to throw the ball, because our OL will not hold up to 3+ seconds of releasing the football after the snap.

As far as the run game goes, I think Boutte is just the kind of mass we were missing inside last season against Bama to get a little push there. Boutte is a massive man at 6'5 346, and if Teheuma is still out at RT he's 6'5 315...all 3 of Fournette's big runs against Ole Miss came to that side of the line.

Good stuff guys.

I'd really really really like to have 15-20 more of these discussions and no more YAL SCARED or LF31 GET IT threads.

Cheers

Honestly, if we can't complete a forward pass, LF7 wont do much better than last year.

Not even a little. That would be Dillon Gordon. He was what was missing to try to combat Bama's massive front 7. He was like having an extra OL out there. Mouton missed a few blocks but not having Moore wasn't why we couldn't move the ball.

Not convinced the O-line is much improved. Even against Ole Miss, there were several stops behind the line of scrimmage where our RBs had no chance.

Everyone was so focused on LF's long runs that the negative plays were somewhat overlooked.

Where this is true, there is a significant difference in that this year LSU has an OC and Head Coach that will make adjustments to the play calling to try to counter-act any deficiencies of the OL. The same can not be said about years past. The previous coaching staff never changed the game plan once the game started. No adjustments -- pound the ball. pound the ball. Take a sack on 3rd and long.

I think this game will be much closer than what Bama and the Pseudo-Bama fans from College Station think. However, I think the score at the end will not be what most LSU fans are hoping.
