Question for Carolina fans

In my deep thoughts while on the lawn mower I began to think of my youthful days of the early 80's and how the conferences were aligned. I never remember South Carolina in the ACC, but as an Independent in football and the Metro in basketball and baseball. The question I wonder is why did South Carolina leave the ACC? Was it academics, an argument, or other reasons?

I don't think we have many UNC fans here.

Multitude of factors. We started really competing at a high level, winning the football ACC championship in 1969 and basketball in 1971. We had good but mean players from up north and conference darlings UNC, Duke and UM coudln't stand this upstart and started trying to make it more difficult for us to compete. Also we were losing out to SEC teams for recruits because of more strict academic requirements for the ACC. Paul Dietzel and the AD then made the decision to leave the conference. Dietzel in particular thought we were hitting a ceiling in competition as well.
But mainly UNC and Dookie being jealous that we were starting to upset the applecart.

This would be one for scrooster to take.

I won't get too into detail because scrooster will probably be here soon to give the full story.
However, we started getting good and the traditional ACC powers couldn't stand it and were screwing us over whenever possible.

Carolina = North Carolina
Carolina = North Carolina

Same reason A&M, Oklhaoma, etc. want away from Texas. Not exact scenario, but it's similar. Tired of UNC and Duke's shite.

Considering the word "North" is missing from the left side of your equation, I'd say that is false.

I would also add that back then the ACC admissions standards were more stringent than the NCAA and the Big 4 in NC always got who they wanted no matter what, and Carolina had to submit waivers, write letters, lobby, bribe, etc to the ACC Commish at the time and were denied every time. Such bs.

And Clemson pussied out and didn't leave with us like they said they would, and the ACC ended up lowering their standards after we left.
ETA: And for what it is worth, even though we ended up in the SEC, I think leaving the ACC was a horrible move for South Carolina.

Yup. Clemson didn't give 2 shits about basketball back then, only football and figured with us gone, they would be the dominant force in the ACC, which ended up not happening til they started cheating in the late 70s anyway.

I think we would be a dominant national level basketball school today if we had remained in the ACC. Frank would have kept winning, and we would have been a very appealing job after he would have left.

Idk man the reigning powers really did not like us. I heard stories from old relatives about UNC students throwing marbles on the court during our fast breaks, putting gum in the players hair when we went into the locker room, etc.
I agree in the long term things probably would have worked out better for us but things were really stacked against us in that league. I'm glad we have found a home in the SEC now though. Would call it fortuitous that we landed in the best conference for sure.

I called him "moral police" ONE time in the thread where he flipped out about Boom firing the equipment guy and he went off. It was kind of surprising to me with the way he talks to people on here that he would let that bother him, but it did. It was like I killed is dog or something. I'm not sure, but he hates me and hasn't been around much since.

I think FSU is a puss to. If I remember correctly, The SEC offer FSU to join but they declined. Correct me if I'm wrong.

That wasn't the final straw. Some tater made accusations about the Charleston church shooter being a Gamecock fan and got really disgusting with his enjoyment of that situation. The mods let it go and didn't reprimand the tater that did it, and scrooster pretty much hung up his hat after that was allowed to happen.
I miss having him around.
