So, they changed the mascot from the Colonel because it was 'racist'... but they changed it to 'The Black Bear'.... isn't that also a bit racist? Sure, if it was at a normal school probably not a big deal, but purposely changing your name because of racism to.. The Black Bears... just seems a little fishy to me.

Except that there is a factual Mississippi black bear.

Right about this time of year they're fattening up and forming their rectal plugs for hibernation.

Should have made their mascot a shark. At least fins up would have made sense then. and there is historical meaning behind it like Big Al being an elephant

This happened while I was in school there. The student body voted on a new mascot and we had three options to choose from. The black bear, the land shark, and the third was completely idiotic. Obviously the bear won, but the land sharks were a close second and how the fins up was started.

The black bear is indigenous to Mississippi. Population is slowly increasing.

The golden bear (Cal) is the same bear found on the California State flag. It is of the California grizzly bear. The California grizzly has been extinct for over 50 years.

Hope this helps.

No black bears aren't racist.

That's like saying Pigs might be racist when it represents the team who's fans are fat Arkansas backwoods rednecks.

Check yourself. Tony Fein started the "Fins Up". Go back and read up on Tony Fein.

If I am not mistaken, the "Mississippi" Black Bear is actually of the Louisiana Black Bear family.

This is the common name for that species of bear, and its native range is in the state.
