No, this is not about the pick...

So Bama knows that Clemson has one shot at the endzone and then they would be forced to kick the FG forcing OT. It has been suggested that Bama could have instructed their DBs to just tackle the receivers off the line, take the PI/Holding penalty and force OT, but this runs the risk of Watson walking in for an easy score with every DB engaged.

What would have happened if Saban simply ran out 20 defenders? im guess there would be a pre-snap unsportsmanlike conduct penalty or something, right? My question is, where is the line drawn? What about 13 defenders? 15?

ETA: this type of play would ruin the game, but so has fouling down 10 with a minute to go in basketball.

The play would be blown dead at the snap, with no time running off the clock.

Tackle or be tackled, I always say...

Right, but time would run off the clock leaving Clemson with no option but to kick the FG.

I don't think they would have stopped play for too many men on the field

Or they could have gone for the touchdown anyway, so your point is moot

Are you sure? I don't think too many players on the field is blown dead, as the offense can decline the penalty and accept the result of the play.

They don't if it's one or two players, but if Bama trotted 20 onto the field I'd bet they'd get a delay of game or unsportsmanlike penalty.

They could have, but that would give Bama a much bigger advantage. As it is, Bama had nothing to gain on the last play. It was either going to be a TD or an incompletion leaving time on the clock for a FG. If Clemson goes for the TD with :01 then Bama can win the game with a stop.

It didn't work for Derek Dooley

Cannot end. Half the distance to the goal and if the clock ran out an untimed play. And if Bama keeps committing a penalty Clemson would keep getting an untimed play.

I see where you are going though. At some point they just take the kick and move on to OT.

It may have worked but would have been a total dick move.

I know what you're saying, but my point it, as it stands Bama has nothing to gain on the last play. Watson wasn't going to take a sack and he wasn't going to hold on to the ball too long so that time expired. Bamas only hope was a holding penalty with a 10 second run off.

But trotting 20 guys out there, you ensure Clemson doesn't score and is now faced with a decision to either kick the FG or go for the TD. If they go for the TD Bama can now win the game with a stop.

Saban should have done the old FSU defense from the days when Spurrier was at UF. It's what I thought Bama was going to do during the game: combination man and zone, bump at the line, and don't even risk allowing the receiver a clean break; if in doubt pull him down to the ground. Clemson could only gain 1 foot or so via penalty. If they'd done this Clemson would have had 1 or 2 seconds on the clock. Dabo kicks FG on that last play and it goes OT.

At some point it becomes about the spirit of the game. Not sure what recourse the ref would have, but I am sure they could act on blatantly unsportsmanlike conduct.

I dno man, what do you think would have happened if a female Russian lady with a monkey in her purse was piloting a spaceship and it had to make a crash landing on the field with 2:00 left?? Would they postpone the game? Wait for the aircraft to leave? Move the game somewheres else and restart it? Would they keep selling beer?

If Bama put 20 out there and Clemson didn't snap the ball because of it that would be flagged as a delay of game on Bama.

The offense isn't forced to snap it when the defense has too many players, they do it because it can be a free play if they want it to be.
