Noob question:
Upvotes are acknowledgements that you made a good point.
Downvotes are an indicator of successfully triggering butthurtness in your rivals.
Therefore, both are equally desirable. Or am I missing something?

No, downvotes mean that you're a bad person, and you should feel bad. Upvotes mean you're a wonderful poster and other posters on the site want to have gay sex with you.

As to the overall question, some of have stalkers who down vote every post and some are just terrible poster. TAMU used to have a down voter who down voted every TAMU post. Clearly they were off their meds or just had way too much free time.
Since their are no consequences to up votes or down votes (no free steak knives for so many up votes like S&H Green Stamps, and no confinement to ThunderBoard for too many down votes)
Mainly this place has become troll central and may god have mercy on your soul.

That's kind of you to say. I do live in Arkansas, and I love it. (I teach my kids we'll always be Texans, though, regardless of where we live.)

This is the biggest troll board on the web....very little sports discussion to speak of. Up and down vote just adds to the troll reputation.
