Considering college football is an amateur sport, ticket prices are ridiculous.

them being amateurs has nothing to do with the ticket price.

Ticket prices are ridiculous because demand is ridiculous. A lot of people love their college football.

High prices help us fancy lads avoid mingling with the poors.

It's a pretty simple take, and it has nothing to do with the amateurism pointed out in the OP.

Not saying I cannot afford tickets but it get to a point where paying so much for them makes you shift pay for them down your priority list.
And it's not separating the more wealthy from trash. It's about trying to be frugal with hard earned money.
For my family of 5 that's $350 just for tickets, not to mention parking, food, gas and hotel. All that combined for me that's almost 1k.

Which brings me to drill down further....
@ $70 a ticket with 100,000 seat stadium that's $7,000,000 a game.
With most schools having 7 home games that's $49,000,000. I mean how much money do these schools really need to support the Athletic department?
I know I'll get a bunch of crap from most of you but for the average person 1k to see one football game is not possible.

If you really wanted to know the answer to that, I'm sure there are budgets you can look at and see.

But the supply is increasing every year with more and more quality access with HD widescreen tvs all over the place - hell, even in tailgate areas. I get an email every day from the Bulldog Club with ticket offers. Supply is quickly outstripping the demand and I see ticket prices leveling off and probably decreasing. I let my season tickets go last year. I don't have to deal with the crowds watching it on tv.

I totally agree. I love taking my kids to a love game and letting them have that experience but there comes a point where I cannot justify paying that much for one game.
We just would rather have a bunch of friends over and watch it on our HD TV.

1. The argument you made is about demand reducing not supply increasing. You're not adding seats to your stadium yearly.

2. Premium seating at Kyle is in limited supply (about 1/2 the size of MSU's stadium) and there is a waitlist. Our alumni base is growing so demand should continue to increase for us.

But the players get a 4 year degree that is not worth shite. Still can't get a job with "general studies."

Give to your schools booster club and get season tickets

I'm not a sidewalk fan though

No. You define supply as number of seats in stadium. I define supply as number of seats plus suitable alternatives. There are way more suitable alternative today than just several years ago.

Everyone that I know of has a waiting list for premium seating. That doesn't really play into this conversation because Mr and Mrs Got Rocks are going to pay for premium seating because it is important to them to be seen with all of their wealth. Almost an inelastic demand curve.

It really has gotten insane. No way you can take your family anymore unless it's to a dog game.

Is it though? Sure, demand for the big games is there, but walk around Bryant Denny an hour before the Chattanooga game and you'll be given tickets for free. Even the lesser SEC games you can find tickets for well below face value. I paid $15 for a 40 yard line seat for the Ole Miss game a few years ago. Granted, it was an 8 o'clock kickoff which many people don't like, but I've also gotten Arkansas, Kentucky, and Miss St tickets for well below face value.

It's artificial demand that guarantees the universities get their money.

My Auburn tickets, including donations, have gone up about $100 over the past ten years.

I dont think they are that expensive. Concert tickets, now those are insane....
