Pretenders and Contenders in 2017

Contenders
Bama - they return their qb and most of their skill players. They also have the best coach in the country.
Auburn - they return 17 starters and their qb Jarrett stidham is a beast.
Florida - Even though they are no means great they'll do enough to win the East again this year. A sold defense and a good running game will be just good enough.
Pretenders
Georgia - Kirby is anther Saban disciple that is overrated. Chubb is mediocre since the injury and they have no oline.
LSU - Etling is mediocre at best and teams will stack the box against Guice. Orgeron also has never proven himself as a head coach.
Tennessee - Yes I'm calling out my own team. Butch has proven again and again that he can't win the big game. Unproven qb and lack of depth in several key areas spell trouble.

Auburn will get beat by LSU though.

I don't understand.... I'm witnessing a fan with an honest opinion of their team. Color me shocked.

Solid breakdown, OP. To be fair, Lyle can win a big game every now and then, but he will make up for it by shitting himself in a sure fire win weeks down the road

You forgot arkandas contender. 11-1

Kentucky pretender.
Also not sure how solid that UF defense will be but I do agree they will likely end up in ATL again.

I actually cant really disagree with any of that.
I think Kirby really needs one more year before your assessment is fair. If they only win 7-8 games again his trend will be down. Most ATL sports media is comparing his second year potential to Urban Meyer at UF, Saban at Bama, Tressel at OSU. I also think thats not likely either. So still unproven.

LSU and Auburn need to be switched.

Move Florida to the pretenders

Oh I agree. They are all like "if thet could it then why not Kirby?" They completely ignore the fact that each of those coaches were successful as HCs at lower tier programs before making their big move.
Urban at Utah elevated that program.
McElwain did well at Colorado which is a tough job
Saban already had a NC at LSU before Bama
Tressel won national championships at Youngstown
Kirby? Nada. No prior HC experience.
Which is why UGA shouldnt have to hire another schools DC with no HC experience. In fact, if we are basing potential on past experience of other coaches Kirby is more likely akin to Will Muschamp at UF.

I agree with you for once.

But your first post in this thread is wrong

I'd add LSU to contenders. Etling seems very average...but MANY eventual very strong SEC starters came out of the gate that way. If he's decent, they can be very good. And Guice is one of those rare players that can be the focus of the D and still shred you. I think Bama, Auburn and LSU are a dogfight this year.

Switch Dawgs with AU and Gators.

Back to disagreeing with ya.

What makes LSU a contender?
Guice is probably the 2nd best RB in the country (Saquon Barkley at PSU is an animal), I'll give them that.
But their QB is trash
Their OL is trash
Their WRs are average
They have depth behind Guice.
Their OC is more overhyped than Jeremy Johnson was.
Even with no real passing threat to worry about and a weak OL Guice is still good enough to make them look good enough against teams with weak defenses like Ole Miss or State. But the teams they play with a good defense like Bama or Auburn (aka real contenders) will have enough firepower to key on Guice and shut that shite down.
Their defense is good. Great pass rush with Key. Solid DBs. At least one good LB, although he still has to prove it. But it's definitely not the elite defenses that LSU used to have. Teams that can attack on the ground and in the air will pick them apart.
Guice and Key are elite players. But if they lose either one, especially Guice, their season will go to hell and fast. Either one of them goes down and this is a .500 team
Mark this down, they will he exposed as pretenders by the real contenders and Auburn and Bama will both blow LSU out. They will be utterly embarrassed by both school from Alabama.
tDecline is strong now and building momentum. The Ed Orgeron era will be reminiscent of the Gerry Dinardo era (without the lucky 10 win season because the West isn't down). 41-7 loss to AU in Tiger Stadium in Dinardo's last season will be similar to the game this season
