Looks like it will be a down year in the SECW. I wish Bama still had a competitive baseball team.

I always find the range of rankings in college baseball to be interesting. OM at 8 in one but 22 in the other.

Rebuilding year for the defending SEC Champs.

what happened to this program?

Auburn is gonna lose a lot of 1-0 games this year.

state lottery scholarships in surrounding states that Alabama doesn't have available to them. That and Jim Wells retiring and them not hiring an adequate replacement as well as the SEC just being incredibly competitive top to bottom

Gaspard, while never tanking the program, never really got things together all at once, mainly because we could never hit.
He averaged going 14-16 in conference play over 7 years, 5 of his 7 years between 14-16 and 15-15. He never quite tanked, and we almost always went to Hoover, but post-year 1 we were never a true CWS threat.
So, he's gone and we'll see what Goff can do. There are some inherent challenges (specifically scholarships), but other places in similar situations have won, so it isn't an excuse.

Alabama will have an interesting team this year. One of the Gaspard frustrations was that we'd have talented freshman have solid freshman seasons and never improve (especially at the plate).
We bring back some guys who had solid freshman years (Chandler Taylor, Cobie Vance) and we bring back 2 starters with sub-2.70 ERAs.
Our league schedule is rough : South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Florida plus the normal old-SEC West slate. I'd expect us to finish relatively similarly to last year, 6-7 games over .500 overall (not a great OOC schedule this year) and hovering around or slightly below .500 in league play.

I noticed that as well for OM, Ore St, and a few others. Even a few weeks in you'll get a lot of variances still.

As with all the other sports, we supposedly have a renewed effort in regards to scoring more. I am not even remotely enthused about this anymore. I will believe it when I see it.

A lot of the west teams will jump by the time SEC play starts.
Hit send too soon

I do enjoy the preseason polls every year because they let us know we're a month from college baseball down here in the South ... but I also remind everyone that polls in February do not matter.
College baseball is like college basketball. Polls don't matter until the last week of February for college basketball and they don't matter until the last week of May for college baseball.
In both cases, even then, only for seeding.
I will add this though - these polls do appear to be closer to reaching an early consensus than normal. Usually they are helter skelter this time of the year but these polls this year are, for the most part, within reason of one another.
One thing I did notice this off season was that a lot of the writers and pollsters traveled during the off season and attended winter workouts and winter scrimmages. That may have something to do with the rough consensus whereas, in the past, the various polls always had a very regional, even an almost conference bias, feel to them.
ETA: BTW Farmer, have a couple of upvotes.

Coastal struggled for part of last season. We beat the hell out of them in a mid-week game. They just got really hot at the perfect time.

This may be the year that the #1 team wins it all. TCU's pitching and overall talent level are unreal this year. They return basically 9/9 position players. Actually, they may upgrade because their OF starter from 15 sat out 16 with an injury and is back for 17. They go 5 deep in returning starters and add the 41st player in the draft who didn't sign for some crazy reason. Oh, and they return their closer.

Can't wait to go deep into the postseason only to lose bc our head coach loves johny wholestaff.

they could win 60 games before the regionals, and i still wouldnt be confident in them taking it all. such a fickle sport

That is always the case. Go to the MLB level and you have the 01(?) Mariners team that was 112 games and only won 1 game in the ALCS. It compounded in college. Anything can happen.
If the maximum you can be confident in winning Omaha is 30% then I am 29% confident TCU should win it all.
