Polian: Spread offenses hurt quality of the NFL because QBs aren't ready to play

In an interview Tuesday, former Giants coach Jim Fassel hinted that there could be a spring developmental league coming from the NFL next year.
That would be the first such league under NFL control since NFL Europa was put out to pasture in 2007 and it would be something that longtime executive and incoming Hall of Famer Bill Polian thinks fills a major void in the sport.
“The quality of our game has suffered because there is not a developmental league,” Polian said on Sirius XM NFL Radio. “Particularly for young quarterbacks; particularly for young offensive linemen; particularly for young defensive linemen, especially 3-4 defensive linemen. There’s a crying need for it.”
Polian went on to say that the rise of spread offenses in college has made the issue even more acute because many quarterbacks aren’t prepared to serve as starters or backups at the professional level. He pointed out the number of quarterbacks produced by the league’s previous European endeavors as a way that a developmental league bolsters the regular NFL.

Glad Auburn doesn't run the spread.

As a Titan's fan I am hoping it is bullshite, but it is ridiculously obvious how much the NFL is struggling to put together more than 10 above average guys at the position

Spacing in the NFL is at a premium. Those windows for QBs are so stinking small. I agree that the spread has hurt the QBs.

Well good thing then that College Football doesn't exists solely for the benefit of the NFL.

Wish the NFL would cease to exist.

It's definitely going to hurt QB play in the next 10 years with more and more colleges going to it. It will also make players from pro-style schools much more coveted. It will be interesting to see what Mariota brings to Tennessee this year for sure.

This reminds me of the article back in May where Tom Cable said spread offenses in college are a disservice to players.
His comments were brushed off by most on this board. But he basically said that college football (offensively) has become really bad fundamentally.

Well looks like QB coaches in the NFL will start having to do what college coaches have been doing for decades. Developing players to be successful at their level of the game.

Maybe Fassel should ask Coughlin why the Giants went to a West Coast offense last season.

On no no no. There is no time for that. These NFL coaches are not paid enough for that shite.

But what's the answer?
College coaches are going to do whatever they have to do to win games, period. They can't worry about how well a player transitions to the pro game.

It's the air raid offenses and the spread offenses fault for them not being able to get good quarterbacks! NOT THE COACHES INABILITY TO COACH THEM!!!!

Yeah, the NFL isn't the place to develop a QB. The defenses are too fast and the coaches will break down a guy that isn't quite ready. Spread QBs aren't taught to read coverages they're mostly taught to read 1 or 2 guys on the defense then make their decision.

If only college QBs could all learn to play QB at LSU, the NFL would be better off.

Probably why LSU players excell in the Pros. They know the fundamentals and come from an NFL style offense.
