I’ve never understood the Gruden love. He got fired from coaching. The only time he won was with Dungy’s players at Tampa Bay. Why would he want to destroy the myth that he was some kind of awesome coach? He is a white Herm Edwards. If you listen to Herm talk he was the greatest that ever was and he always did the perfect thing in every situation. But when you actually look at his career you are see he sucked.

Do they not play football in the NFL like they do in college?

Lol if a failed NFL coach like Nicky can dominate, SUPER BOWL champ HC Jon Gruden would never lose a game

Like 3 time Super Bowl winner Bill Walsh when he coached at Stanford?

Same. He's not coached at all in 10 years. Hasn't coached in college in 30.

I don't think he was ever just a GREAT coach any way.

While this is true, his coaching abilities have been exaggerated throughout the years as he's become somewhat of a living urban legend to football fans. The way hes ogled over and talked about like he's accomplished as much as a Saban or Belichick is pretty crazy when put next to his actual records and results.

That being said, anybody that claims they wouldn't be excited to kick the tires on Gruden in the event of an opening is lying. He could flame out spectacularly or be one of the few elite college coaches, I don't think there's an in-between in his case. He should be able to recruit based off his name and reputation alone, so the potential is definitely there and you'd be foolish not to give him the reigns if at all possible.

For the most part, yeah. I don't really think he'd go but Tennessee has to at least make the call.

Gruden does not scare me as a Bama fan. Great guy but he has not recruited in forever and my guess this part of coaching will prevent him ever going to CFB

You never know. I bet some of these people laughing were laughing when Mal Moore offered Saban. Never hurts to ask.

The ability to talk to a camera does not mean you can relate to a teenager or sell yourself to parents.

And a lot of pro guys struggle trying to coach college because they just hate recruiting. Its a lot of work evaluating all those players. A lot of time to travel all over the country for visits. And some people just dont like going into random peoples living rooms and and playing salesman.

And imagine going from having all the off time that comes with being a broadcaster for over a decade, to having to put in amount of time it takes to recruit at a high level for a D1 school. He'll probably hate it after a month.

People want the SEC to be good again. Gruden going to UT will do that and I'm confident it'll get done.

Why would he be an "awful" hire?

He hasn't coached in college in 30 years, hasn't coached in general in 10, and when he was coaching he wasn't outstanding. No recruit alive knows him as a Super Bowl winning coach, just the loud obnoxious guy that does the QB Camp and MNF on ESPN.

He's just a louder retread of Butch Jones
