Penn State received to as close of the death penalty as a football program can probably receive in this modern era and once they cleaned house, put a good coach in place, won the Big 10 in just 5 years.

What Ole Miss did was the usual College Football scandal stuff...it's really bad, but not at the level of covering up the molesting of little boys by a deviant.

Ole Miss will get hammered, the coaching staff will get flushed...key Admin people that had knowledge will get the ax, Houston Nutt is going to get a big check and then Ole Miss will settle down and move on.

What type of program they will be in a few years will depend on the decisions the school makes now.

None of that was as profound as you think it was, you SEC-obsessed chode.

Ole Miss hasn't won the conference in 50 years, and you're hinting it's possible for them to come back in five years as SEC champs?

Penn State prestige >>>>>>>>>>> Ole Miss prestige.

It's like comparing Clemson to Western Kentucky

Makes sense, if you don't take into account the money and support and tradition that Penn State has vs OM.

Look at history. Since integration OM is only successful when they are cheating. It's as predictable as the changing of the seasons.

No I don't...Until Saban retires, Alabama gets the best recruits and that won't chance.

But Ole Miss can be a respectable and competitive program.

The NCAA basically helped Penn State recover. They gave them their scholarships and bowl games back.

If OM gets hammered, they won't get that privilege.

NCAA reduced the original sanctions after it was clear they over reached into a civil/criminal arena.

That won't be the case at Ole Miss. Look to USC for a closer look at how the sanctions will immediately affect the program, only Ole Miss won't have the financial backing, name brand, location, and recruiting talent pool that USC has.

It will be a hard hit and long road back.

First poster got it right. After enough time, yes a team will return to where it was. However, where Ole Miss was before the cheating was at the bottom of the barrel.

penn st got a dog & pony show and a great big coverup. that place should have been burned down and if the rest of it ever comes out people might just do it.

While that's true, they could have/should have messed them up worse than they did, Penn State was a good football program with a history. The wrong doings at Penn State didn't make them good at football. Most of the wrongdoings at OM were to make them competitive. Take those away and its back to less than mediocrity.

The NCAA rolled back some of the penalties because they really had nothing to do with football. All of Ole Miss's allegations are related to football, and if these hookers are linked to recruiting they are going to pound them harder. Therefore, at no time in the future will the NCAA roll back on any of the punishment that they dish out to Ole Miss.

Penn State also plays in the Big 10 which had some bottom dwellers so they never fell below a .500 record. I don't see Ole Miss not falling to the bottom of the conference. It is a much more difficult circumstance to recover from IMO.

Not unless they cheat

Let's say that is true. There are reasons for this, but let's not go into that.

Point is, unless you do cheat, it's just built in that you are at a massive disadvantage to certain other schools because of geography and population.

And if you do somehow get some Ace wizard who can equalize things as a head coach by scheme or recruiting... he immediately decamps to go to Austin or something.

So.

If I were a decision maker, this is kind of a no brainer.

You don't realize a profit on football despite the TV contracts, so basically you are paying to be the Washington Generals.

If you did make money off football, your school would be one of really only about 20 schools in America, max.

So why play? Why engage in an activity in which you have no real chance of grabbing the brass ring?

If you are trying to grow corn in Fairbanks, Alaska you have to realize sometime that's not a constructive use of your time.
