Hear me out, I seen several threads about "Saban and Alabama" has killed the Sec. That's far from the truth, first we have good coaches in the Sec that haven't gotten a 4 year recruiting cycle yet. Second expectations were raised because we had a Great bowl season as a whole last year. That is always touch and go because Sec picks match ups outside of Sugar bowl, so teams like Tennessee and LSU were given favorable match ups..no trolling...a lot teams of teams were given the Sec bump in preseason rankings.
The biggest reason why the Sec is down (The especially members of the Big 6 outside of Bama) ........QB play
Look at trends of each school in Sec, 11 teams are trending up and down based on Quarterback play.
LSU probably Top 5 with Good QB
Auburn probably Top 10 if White is healthy.
Florida probably Top 10 with Game manager.
Tennessee's Doobs has not progressed as QB.
Miss St got themselves a QB now trending up.
South Carolina has found themselves a QB.
Kentucky has found themselves a QB.
We are fine guys we just got to develop QBs like the rest of the Nation.

QB play
The style of play in high school ball in Louisiana generally doesn't lend itself to development of pro-style QBs. There have been some exceptions, Evangel Christian notably, but generally LSU has had to go out of state to recruit pro style QBs. many of those have come from Texas, where their style of play develops more pro style QBs, which is why I was thinking that, with the admission of A&M to the SEC, more Texas QBs would become available.
Unfortunately, 5* QBs have dried up in Texas lately.
Here's a list of 5* QBs coming out of Texas over the last ten years, and where they signed:
2009 Russell Shepard - LSU
2009 Garrett Gilbert - Texas
2007 Ryan Mallett - Michigan
That's it.

Incorrect...he has developed OK. Not a world-beater as far as passing, but a very solid SEC QB.
UT's problem is - and has been - defense and injuries.

I've seen several of Tennessee games involving Doobs from his 2nd half vs Bama in 14'to his recent games. He has not progressed as a passer, he routinely doesn't get past his 2nd target and locks on to his read.
