Probably the most miserable football game I've ever sat through because of the rain/sleet and, of course, the football game. The only upside was it was so miserable that my brother and I convinced my dad to buy us giant, expensive Alabama Nike coats, which was the shite for a kid in the late 90s early 2000s.

Cold, wet and miserable: Fans relive an ugly and historic Iron Bowl they'd rather forget - AL.com

Best line of the whole thing from old Alabama radio man Doug Layton

quote:

Doug Layton, who has broadcast Alabama games for most of the last three decades, peers up at the leaden sky from the south tunnel and says, "It just goes to show you. God doesn't want this game here."

quote:

Paul Finebaum, ESPN radio host - The game itself is a blur. I remember getting there early in the morning, and all the sudden the weather started turning. Can you imagine? Being frozen, rained on, snowed on and sleeted on before the game ever started. I actually do not remember anything about the the game because I was so cold and so miserable.

quote:

James Spann, ABC 33/40 meteorologist - I remember it well. Tuscaloosa's official high November 18, 2000 was 39 degrees, kickoff temperature was 37. A mix of rain and sleet fell during much of the game; the rain total that day in Tuscaloosa was 0.61 inches. If temperatures would have been 5-8 degrees colder, it would be all freezing rain, and the stadium would have been an ice skating rink.

quote:

Paige Barnes Dorsey, Alabama fan from Tuscaloosa - I was working the concession stand for cheerleading that year. We made extra money by ripping apart cardboard boxes and selling the pieces to the crowd for them to sit on. I still say that was the coldest I've ever been. I couldn't feel my toes.

quote:

Blake Wade, Alabama fan from Tuscaloosa - I was there, was offered a poncho. Declined the poncho. Wish I would've accepted the poncho.

quote:

Cole Smith, Alabama fan from Tuscaloosa (15 at the time) - I feel like we all should be in a therapy group.

"Hi, my name is Cole, and I was at the 2000 Iron Bowl."

"Hiiiii, Cooooole."

Wasn't as cold as the Papa John's Bowl we played against UConn.

"Papa's in the House!" will ring in my nightmares forever.

That game sucked sitting through as an Auburn fan. I can't even imagine what it was like as a Bama fan.

The biggest thing wasn't the temperatures, it was that it was literally as cold as it could possibly be without having frozen precipitation. It sleeted early, but the majority of the game it was something like 37 degrees and raining.

That game sucked. Not because we lost- I knew that was going to happen before hand. It was absolutely freezing.

Pretty much this. All I can remember about the game is that it was terrible. It was just bitterly cold and wet, especially in the upper deck, sitting in front of one of the portals. Absolutely miserable.

Buddy, it was 27 degrees at kickoff in the shithole that is Legion field. Don't tell me about cold as it could be without raining. I sat in the shade for the entirety of that awful game pouring hot coffee on my hands for warmth.

Worst game I attended was the 31-0 arse whipping Fran put on us in 2002. Cold as shite and it was the worst performance of the Saban era.

I think I remember some old baws sitting behind me groaning about Saban 02 was a rough year after Mauck tore his ACL

I'd take that over what I sat through in 2000.

I was at both games. I'll take 27 and dry all day over 37 and soaking wet.

That Alabama team was so miserable on offense that you knew there was no way they were going to score a touchdown, either. And, that was the Ruddi Johnson team that always had close games for 3 qtrs. then Ruddi wore teams down and ran for 100 yards in the 4th.

I also remember they did some sort of anniversary greatest players thing at halftime. They'd be planning and pumping that thing up for like 12 months, and then the team sucked and the weather was awful. Bart Starr was going to come but didn't because of weather.

And somehow that team beat a 7 win, bowl bound Ole Miss 45-7

Miserable. My fiance and I drove up and stupidly did not bring gloves so we stopped at a gas station and thought we were so clever getting cloth work gloves well those just got wet and made your hands even colder. Just a wet nasty game

I tried that method and it works for about 10 seconds then your hands are cold and wet again

Can we post an article containing thoughts on Mike DuBose's bowl cut?

Emailed that article to my wife and she reminded me that we were supposed to meet up with some friends for dinner at Depalma's and it was so miserable everyone bailed and we went and got beer and takeout and went back to the hotel and watched games there

Everyone knew we were going to lose. One of the most depressing Bama games ever. It was worth it at the time knowing it was Dubose's last game

What I remember is this huge, inflatable, houndtooth hat that former Bryant players were walking out of during pre-game while the Bama band was playing some kind of funeral dirge.
