Opinions: Was the addition of aTm and Missouri backwards?

When Mizzou and aTm were added to the league, Missouri had a good basketball program and aTm had the more SEC ready(we thought)football program.

Instead, Missouri plays for the SEC Championship two years in a row, aTm doesn't. Missouri is terrible at shooty hoops and aTm split an SEC Championship.

Seems backwards to me...

We did finish tied for 2nd in a much more competitive West, though. And finished in the top 5 nationally, as did Mizzou in 2013.

Edit - I had forgotten that they finished in the top 5 in 2013. My apologies.

We did? We were coming off of a 7-6 season, just lost our top 10 drafted QB, and breaking in a new HC, OC, and DC. Mizzou had a stable coaching staff and averaged ~10 wins a year over the last 5, including a 12 win season.

They did in 2013.

Yes. regarding your recruiting base, aTm was a more SEC ready football program.

Regarding recent basketball success, many thought Missouri would push Kentucky with their entrance to the league, but it has been the exact opposite.

aTm has had success against UK in hoops and won a shared league title during their time.

In both the Big 12 and the SEC, everybody and their dog said we were going to finish at the bottom of the West.

The revisionist history that people thought we would be really good at football on here is hilarious. Everyone was predicting 4-6 win seasons for eternity

Oh this again. Fantastic. LSU was 6-2 in the SEC. A&M was 6-2 in the SEC. LSU was 10-2 overall. A&M was 10-2 overall. LSU BEAT A&M head to head, as they always do. If Bama had 3 losses that year who would have won the division and played in Atlanta? But yea say whatever you want to make yourselves feel better. Honestly it's embarrassing.

Everyone said A&M would be in the cellar in football. We had more potential than Mizzou, but as far as on field success the mid 00s to early 10s were a good time for Mizzou. A&M had some success in 06 and 10, but neither were 10 win years.

Our recruiting base prior to gaining the SEC brand was third or fourth pick in Texas. It is revisionist history to say our recruiting base today is what it was then. We were always a fixer upper.

And we weren't that bad in the Big 12 either. We went on a pretty good run of tournament appearances before the move.

Why aren't you castigating the OP for saying we split the title in basketball? I'm just asking for consistency.

Not even a little. A&M had issues. Most predicted A&M to struggle. A&M did far better than anyone expected. Simple as that and if you say otherwise then you aren't remembering correctly.

Hey OP, Aggie and Kentucky had same exact conference record. Aggies beat Kentucky head to head the only time they played. Aggies got number 1 seed in SEC tourney. They won the regular season title.

See how easy that was. But I'm sure you'll still claim your delusional stance of omg guys we tied for 2nd place in our own division in 2012 with the best player in our schools history.

I don't know who this "many" is, but most thought Mizzou would be a very good addition to a relatively poor basketball conference. An upper echelon type program regularly finishing in the top half of the league. The true blue blood basketball programs would have the ability and recruits to push Kentucky. Mizzou has a good history, but never has been a true blue blood program.

This is a message board so yes, any thread can be started, but seems to me, more time is needed to have this conversation. Time sometimes has a way of evening things out, so 5 years into it is a weak barometer.

Works for me. You might want to let the legion of coonasses on this board who insist that A&M tied for 1st this year in basketball know that their stance is delusional, though. You might also write a letter to the SEC letting them know that their official stance is delusional.

But I'm fine with it. Let's just be consistent.
