yea you don't know that either do you,, maybe they told him he was 'finishing out his final season', out of respect and to get him to stop having pressors to tell the world he would be the HBC for the next 10 years. He's still a bit of an eccentric A-type so it's not hard to see why he would quit now rather than leave more quietly on the AD's terms.

Has he been telling the world he would be coaching till he's 80?

Well, in his defense, he did have to watch some God-awful USCe football. Being wasted would make it easier.

I did enjoy the Spurrier Show when he had a good buzz on a few years back. (I'd link, but can't from here)

It just seems out of character for him to not finish the season.

So its out of character for him to want a university he obviously cares a lot about to go ahead and start finding a replacement in an off season that will have several large programs with head coaching jobs open? Or that he can give those on his staff a chance to show what they can do with more responsibility in a season thats already lost anyway, while also potentially putting a spark into his team that is clearly pretty divided right now?

Plus, Spurrier doesn't want a farewell tour. Despite him saying hilarious things in press conferences hes never been the type to seek the spotlight.

Anything less than one of the two above mentioned reasons and he is just a fricking quitter. To quit mid season on your team without a serious reason will blemish his career in my opinion.

Yep, because only you know what is acceptable and only you know all the factors and only you can judge because only you have been in Spurrier's shoes. It's all about you and your message board life.

If he announced he was retiring at the end of the season all of these things you mention could still be done.

You aren't a Division 1 football coach with the hopes and futures of players, an SEC program, and an entire University to consider.

Consider what? Quitting now instead of at the end of the year doesn't benefit anything besides spurriers fragile ego.

Except it does and you're blinded by your hate for Spurrier to see that.

How does quitting now instead of next month benefit? And am a spurrier fan, so keep dumb comments like that to yourself.

Because he's giving the interim staff a chance because he realizes he's doing more harm than good. Everyone sees this except a select few UGA and Bama fans.
