When Tuberville took over at OM, they were under severe recruiting sanctions if memory serves. What prompted that period of probation and when did it begin/end?

What did us in was taking recruits out of the visit radius to Memphis.

The reason for the severity was an incompetent as hell AD that rolled over and didn't fight the NCAA at all.

Good idea...from wiki...

However, in December 1993, Brewer and Ole Miss were again hit by allegations of recruiting violations. The NCAA would eventually cite the program for 15 transgressions, all of them serious and some of them embarrassingly lurid. An NCAA report said that Ole Miss boosters and coaches had offered recruits gifts, including cash and, in one case, a car. Boosters were also accused of breaking national rules by taking recruits 30 miles outside of Oxford, sometimes to strip clubs in Memphis. Most damningly, the NCAA alleged that Ole Miss officials knowingly allowed the violations to occur, demonstrating a lack of institutional control of the football program.

Billy Brewer was in charge and it was in 93 that there were rumblings. The NCAA was flexing it's muscle then and Ole Miss had raised itself from doormat in the 70's to pretty good team with players such as John Fourcade, Mark Young, Todd Sandroni, etc. Not awesome but better than what Steve Sloan had brought in. Basically the whole crux was cash and cars had been given out.

One of the funniest moments during the investigation was when Brewer was being interviewed at SEC media days and he was talking about what a great man Jackie Sherrill was, class act, credit to the conference and what a great friend he was and then someone asked him to respond to Sherrills comments that Ole Miss is dirty and giving out bene's and Brewer said well, anybody that knows Sherrill knows he's a pathological liar

OM continued to cheat while on probation.

Actually, Fourcade was a Sloan recruit (early 80s).

Brewer signed (after boosters paid) blue chip linebackers from the Hamilton, MS state championship team. It was obvious something was amiss when that defense forced Alabama to abandon its running game.

One thing State and Ole Miss folks CAN agree on, is that we both had craptastic athletic directors in the 90s and basically till recently.

From scheduling issues, to not investing in infrastructure, to not improving the experience, they were really bad.

I think Brewer's son used to coach at Ole Miss and is now at UNC. Those Brewer boys can't seem to catch a break.
